Hi Everyone! I'm interested in collecting the most historically accurate, still affordable, sword replicas. Unfortunately, most of the antique affordable swords I've found are also made of high carbon steel, which has not been always available or known. So, I would like to know the different possibilities on the market. Here at SBG (in the Ancient Swords section) is a swordsmith for bronze swords: www.moundbuilderbooks.com/index.html ;D There should be other swordsmiths that make kukris, khopesh, gladius, swords, etc... with original alloys and/or techniques. Since I'm a total newbie, all ideas, suggestions, guidelines, etc... will be very welcome! Thanx!

I hate to tell you this, but we tried that several times, and none of them sold. I frankly like some of the bronze age weapons, but there is no way that it is economically possible to make and sell them. We did a couple of axes at MRL, and they just didn't sell at all. Although some of the iron alloys used in some of the original weapons might surprise you with how good they actually are, there just isn't a market for it. Hank

Hank that is a shame they did not sell.i still like to see them get made. so others can ask and want to learn how to make them.

I checked out that website as it looked kinda interesting. Note that the blade descriptions mention that they are castings.

I would really like a bronze age sword. I think it would be really cool. I once saw a TV program where they compared iron and bronze swords and decided that the bronze sword was actually better... Before concluding that the iron sword they tested with was crappily made.

Here is a link to a page on Viking swords. Of note is a reference, about 2/3 down the page, to a Norseman who finds, in a trolls cave, a sword with a green blade with no rust. This sounds very much like what one would expect from a bronze sword, and lends some degree of credibility to the story. I wonder if there were remote places where a sword many centuries old could survive simply by virtue of not being often used. The movie "Beowulf and Grendel" comes to mind (not the version with Angelina Jolie), in which Grendel is not completely a monster, but merely the last surviving example of a different species of human, whose father was killed before his eyes by the king upon whom he exacts his vengance. www.hurstwic.org/history/articles/manufacturing/text/viking_sword.htm
