So I was planning to get a custom built hilt design like the Schiavona in this picture: fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/ ... 551qpj.jpg fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/ ... 551qtu.jpg and have it mounted on a Darkwood rapier practice blade and use it for rapier sparring and tournaments. The question is, will this Schiavona designed hilt work for the rapier? Does it offer the same guard capabilities and advantages of other rapier hilts/guards? I am currently using a 6-ring rapier (3 rings per side) and I was wondering how the performance of a Schiavona-like hilt will compare to the 6-ring. As to why I want to have a custom made rapier this way, well, I was planning to give it as a gift and wanted it to be unique.

Yep, I don't see why it wouldn't work. To me, it looks more like a rapier guard than the schiavona that I am used to seeing. A schiavona is an Italian basket hilt sword. www.myarmoury.com/feature_spot_schia.htmlen.wikipedia.org/wiki/SchiavonaThe guard you showed would be good for a side-sword and a rapier. I like the looks of it and would be happy to have it for my training rapier.

Thanks Razor. That's good to know. I was planning to give this to my wife and wanted to make it unique compared to the other rapiers we use in our HEMA class. But I also wanted to make sure it was functional. Don't want to have a pretty rapier that doesn't guard and deflect properly. =)

Yeah, that looks more like some kind of schiavona/rapier hybrid.
That said, I would really like to see a rapier with an actual schiavona hilt.

There were in fact a number of schiavona-inspired hilts on rapiers; Oakeshott illustrates one in his European Weapons and Armour. Kind of more flimsy looking than the one you have here, though. For a proper full schiavona hilt on a rapier, I think you'd want a fairly wide-bladed rapier... otherwise it's gonna look like a pin stuck through a melon

I dunno about that. Looking at schiavone and rapiers side by side, the schiavona hilts really don't look much larger:

That sword is made by Danelli Armoury in Italy. I find the hilt very attractive. It gives you the feeling of a schiavona without encasing your hand in a heavy metal cage.
I wonder, is that hilt a direct re-creation of a XVIth century original, or inspired by something?
I think you could go fairly slender on a blade for that hilt, but would stop short of a musketeer or even a schlager blade.
