Almost finished my latest project for myself which is a pair of arm guards with elbow protection and mild steel bars for better armour. I've completely finished one so thought i'd post pics. It has a rabbit fur lining which came off an old coat collar my girlfriend donated to me. Only enough fur for one unfortunately! I'm having trouble with the second guards strips of metal. The holes on the first three strips i drilled then i used an angle grinder to split a wider strip of steel. Now i am trying to drill the last three and it seems to be much harder and is blunting hss drill bits easily. I was under the impression excess heat from grinding had no effect on mild steel? Its possible it isn't mild steel as it was in my dad's shed and he told me it was mild steel. Any tips on drilling stubborn metal? cheers

Very nice work. If a slower speed and coolant isn't cutting i would throw it on the barbecue and leave it to heat up and let it cool. That'll soften it up.Or you could get something like a map gas torch and heat up the area you need to drill. If it's not mild steel a fast drill and no coolant can put a hardened glaze on the part you're trying to drill.

Thanks for the advice mate i tried drilling the other side to meet the existing hole and still had no luck. At the minute i don't have a bbq and couldn't be bothered spending anymore money so just used the angle grinder to meet the hole. Doesn't look as neat as the other guard but its finished and it bothers me no more!

amazing celtic work man! I remember last summer I was going to check if you could make some arm guards for me but I wanted to try drawing the knotwork myself... well I ended up packing all my drawings away to work on "later" and I have no idea where they are. If you're still taking work I'd love to start up something again. I think I have to go sell a sword now for some spendin' cash

thanks mate, yes i'm still taking on members projects. I don't draw celtic art from scratch normally as i find it very tricky. I've got quite a few books of designs, some modern, some historical as well as some of the pages from the book of kells and lindisfarne gospels. That seems to give me plenty to use for most designs if i vary the size or modify the shape etc.
