What is the appropriate width for a longsword with a 36 inch blade? Is one inch too thin?

Depends on the type of blade. But 1 inch is too small. That is like rapier size here.

Umm yeah that's possible since from that pic, it doesn't look like it's 1 inch.

Luke, I have one of Lee's DS1501a longswords. The ricasso measures 1.485" wide by 0.250" thick. Th thick ricasso makes much of the weigh sit close to the hand. The blade has a nice degree of distal taper and it's pretty rigid for such a light sword. Mine weighs 2.6 lbs but I put a slightly heavier guard and pommel on it. As it comes, I'd guess 2.4-2.5 lbs. It's a fast handling sword for having such a long blade. It's a bit long for me, but it should fit you very well.
