Musashi is a great brand to start your collection with. The yahoo answers were written by martial artists, if you just want a budget blade to cut with, musashi is a great choice. Cheness katanas are way over 100 dollars.

I think that in the under $100 category, Musashi is probably the best you'll find...when people start wanting something better than a decent blade and basic fixtures, they HAVE to move up in price. Whether (or how much) something sucks is largely relative to expectations

I recently purchased a Musashi 1060 shirakawa 806RD katana from SwordNArmory. I am completely happy with my purchase & the quality of my Musashi 1060 exceeded my every expectation. You can read my review (written the same hour the FedEx guy delivered it, here: My First Katana, FedEx just delivered!

The first 2 katana you list are not 1060 steel, they're 1045 and are significantly softer. Also they both have zinc alloy tsuba which is essentially nice looking pot metal. Essentially you're going to have to pay $79.99 or maybe $10 more for one of their 1060 shirakawa katana. Please have a look at these: Musashi Shirakawa Katana ~ all of the katana in this series use the same 1060 steel blade & feature a real hamon. The only difference between katana in this series is the tsuba. Different vendors give these varying names depending on the tsuba. They are frequently out of stock, I assume because of their popularity. Currently I know JapaneseSwords4Samurai, located in Alabama have these in stock. This outfit sells various Musashi shirakawa katana at different prices, some $79.99 some at $99.99 - they are all the same blade using different tsuba.

While there are tidbits in there, there is a lot of BS's that show they did not know. One of the yahoo answers were decent. The one where he suggests a cheap blade to take the wear and tear off a more expensive sword. I kind of dismissed the one with "You can't get quality materials or workmanship cheaply. Those are not good swords. Cheness has reasonable Katana" Sorry, have owned 2 Tenchi's and like 5 Musashi's. Everything between the two is about on par with each other based on my limited experience. When it comes to the blades there are serious trade offs to be made, more than the money in your pocket. At $100 its hard to go wrong with a musashi, nothing great but it is a lot of bang for the buck. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8797
