Im new to this forum but not new to swords. Ive collected and sold numerous edged weapons through the years. However I've always wanted the Atlantean. I've been a Conan/Arnold fan for over thirty years. Conan the Barbarian also has my stars some of my favorite bodybuilders Franco Columbo (Pictish Scout on the rock) and Sven Ole Thorsen (Thorgrim). Ive looked for an affordable Atlantean for a while but just couldn't justify spending $300 - $3500 on one. Im sure they are worth it but i just wanted one to hang on the wall and to swing around for exercise. I've searched the net for a week and couldn't find any information in how to modify or strengthen a SLO. So here is what i did.
1. Purchased this sword through amazon for $80 shipped.
www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008BB8X7M
2. Went to Lowes and purchased a 12 inch 5/16 th Steel bolt and an unfinished tapered table leg for $5.
3. Disassembled the sword and removed the cheap plastic handle, faux leather wrap and rat-tail tang.
4. Brought the sword to a local welder and welded the bolt to the blade tang for $25.
5. Measured and cut the table leg to construct a new handle. The length was about 6.7inches.
6. A friend formed a tang re-enforcement piece out of the remaining table leg. This piece slides down the bolt and fits snug
over the area where the bolt meets the tang and is located in the cast hand guard. Unfortunately i didnt take any photos or measurements of this piece.
7. He also drilled a center hole down the middle of the handle.
8. Assembled the blade and screwed on wood handle. Then JB welded the handle flush with the tang re-enforcement part.
9. Installed pommel with nut with blue locktite.
10. wrapped handle with red leather strips using crazy glue.
11. Hand drawn schematic of sword parts with measurements.
12. Hand drawn schematic of Tang Re-enforcement Piece
13. Let dry for 24 Hours.
Here it is:
This sword is one heavy beast but its solid as a rock. Im not planning on cutting anything with it but i have a nice sword for under $300 and had alot of fun making it.
