Hi. I'm a newbie from Milwaukee--to this forum and to sword collecting. My interest isn't new however. Ever since I read my first Conan the barbarian story as a teen they've interested me. I even wanted to take up fencing, but that was never in the cards. And collecting too has been on the back burner.
Several years ago we went to a RenFaire and my interest was piqued. So for Christmas that year my wife bought a couple "swords" off of eBay. I thought they were cool and I have them displayed, but its only been recently, after doing research and finding SBG that I realized what I had were SLOs. They seemed real, despite being stainless (who knew?) and the "Pakistan" ink stamp on the blades. One is a mock-up of a Claymore long sword. Only it isn't so long. The blade is 22 inches! The other is the same, except I haven't yet identified what it's supposed to be. (It has a curved guard that gives it almost a trident-like look.) I've yet to tear them apart to see what sort of tang, if any, these have.
So recently I started wanting more. Not having much money, I looked to eBay. But it's a crap shoot, isn't it? How can you possibly tell what you're getting? Is there a science or secret to eBay (other than avoiding it?)
At the moment, I'm looking at swords under $100. I know. I know. There are no quality battle-ready swords for under $100. I keep hoping something slips through.
I've made several purchases and I'm waiting for their arrival. A Civil War sabre, a Colada del Cud, and 3 dueling swords. All for a reasonable priced, so i won't be too upset if they're all SLOs. Still, maybe with the old fencing swords with the decorative cups, I might have some fun in the back yard with my kids, after I get some masks.
Anyway, again, are there ever any bargains on eBay? I've seen a few that say battle-ready and they look identical to some offered at real online stores. These all are Buy It Nows for $99 that claim to be
Full tang, tempered, battle-ready. Am I just dreaming I might get a decent sword? I mean, I'm not adverse to a wall-hanger, but I'd like to swing them around without fear of it helicoptering.
Well, hi and thanks. I like this place so far. I noticed the forum member's collections area and plan on showing my wife. "See? We can decorate like this!"
Oh, and my oldest is interested now, too. I just bought him this cool blunted dagger with the handle like a cobra. Except where I'm interested in Euros, he likes Japanese and fantasy. He wants a katana and I saw an article here for a decent one for under $100. I'm thinking blunted, also.
