I am new to the sword community and just purchased a WWII Gunto type-98 katana at a gun show. The next day I took it to the back yard to test it out slicing a watermelon and during the swing the Tsuka broke. The good news is it sliced through the melon like paper. It broke right where the blade ends in the Tsuka, I assumed it ran the full length of the blade. Does anybody know where I can buy a replacement one or even a original one?

Can you post some pictures? It would be very helpful if we could see the type, as there are various models. Do you know if it's a genuine Gunto or a reproduction? I know that you can get them on eBay, but that is risky as hell. You could send it in to have a new core made and wrapped using the fittings already on it. This option will be very expensive. If you wish to have one made, there are a few options. We have members here who could help, and i would suggest posting in the Classifieds detailing what you want. Member SwordLord is very talented. Outside of this forum, there is the company Nihonzashi who offers tsuka repair and production. There prices look very good, and they are well regarded. www.nihonzashi.com/sword_customization_handle.aspx#Re-WrappingFred Lohman is another option. www.japanese-swords.com/ I'd personally leave him as a last option. He's very expensive, and by all accounts not a super-pleasant person to deal with. I've also seen more and more mentions of unsatisfactory work. I've never dealt with him personally, so I cannot confirm or deny, hahaha.

Here is a photo of the Tsuka, the guy I bought it from said it was a type-98 Gunto from WW II. And thanks for the info. Here is a pic before I broke it.
