A very dummy guide for the newbies, 101 for battle ready swords. 1) peg in the tang? 2) peen'd? nut? sure. but if you got a nut end, make sure you got a peg in tang! 3) no stainless steel or chrome plated steel, wushu steel, crap steel, etc,. ONLY go with carbon steel or high quality stuff Price range, to be safe $200 and up. Don't buy from ebay to avoid scams and frauds or bad vendors. Enjoy! Feel free to add on your comments so other newbies can enjoy this thread!

You want me to pull out my antique swords with peen'd nuts without pegs in the tang? How about the 200 year old one with clear signs of use? Spanish cutlass from late 1800s...again no peg in tang. In fact, none of my antiques have a peg in the tang...just saying that I don't consider that make or break in a sword...your other points are good, though.

I agree, Jayhawk, many antique swords from many different cultures including Chinese had tangs peened on without a peg. Many modern knives like the marine's kabar also have a peened tang without a peg.
However, going back to what MakChingYuen said, there are TONS of crappy modern Chinese blades flying around and I'm sure a peg along with a peened tang would be an extra fail-safe!

And as we saw in Nox's thread, there can be a peg and it can still be wrong, and until you inspect it properly you'll never know its wrong.

Correct, if the tang is poor a peg will make no difference, if you intend to wield a sword then you must ensure the whole measures up.

Yup, I said in the video, some swords peen'd are fine without a peg but I don't want the dummies to risk.. that's why I put that as a safe mark~ you know.. it's a 101 for most dummies.. you don't want them to risk because it's not even easy to come by any REAL antiques on the internet for sale anyway... and a peen'd sword... hard...
