Hi everyone. I'm new to owning my own sword and have just recently gotten my first katana. It's a Cheness Kaze Katana. I've been reading up about how to clean and maintain a katana but the one thing I can't find anything about is the large amount of grease or oil or whatever that comes on the sword when it's first shipped. I haven't wiped it off the sword yet because I still haven't received my katana maintenance kit to be able to apply my own coat of oil back onto the blade. It's been a almost a week since I got the sword and I'm basically just wondering if leaving this excess oil on it will do anything to the blade and also could it possibly be soaked into the saya? Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Probably a good idea to remove it for the saya's sake. Less gunk inside the better. Use some paper towel and get rid of the packing grease. Then grab an old t-shirt and some rubbing alcohol (the higher the alcohol content the better) and wipe it down with a bit of that.
Then use a clean corner of that t-shirt and apply some LIGHT mineral oil (found at your local pharmacy like the rubbing alcohol) in a thin layer. If you can see the oil, you've got too much on. Wipe away the excess.
Your sword is now cleaned and oiled to guard against rust. Those cleaning kits are cool, but not necessary for proper maintenance.
Welcome to the forum!

You can also use gun oil like Hoppe's Lubricating Oil, RemOil or TriFlo.

Oh ok thanks a lot guys! I just got finished with it. I didn't have any mineral oil but i did happen to have gun oil so i went with that. And i have to say, the sword looks fantastic now! I was already really impressed with its looks before i removed all that excess. But now it's just amazing for me seeing the blade in its full glory for the first time! Sorry, just a little excited haha. I just hope i did it right so it doesn't rust. Anyway, thanks for the advice guys. And thanks for the welcome!
