...its dollar amount is OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAND!!!!!!!Ok, I'm sorry for the above. But it is true. Weta, the workshop that makes all sorts of movie prop goodness will be releasing an Orcrist replica made of springsteel, meaning it will be useable. The link has more details as to its features. The price though...yeah. I mean, yeah, Weta is cool and all, but how many people will really be willing to shell out almost 10k for this sword? Most custom smiths could make this sword to similar specs and materials (except maybe a mammoth tooth handle and not urethane) for less (and also less weight; 6 lbs is...a lot)... So what are your thoughts on this piece?

I think it looks nice and I'd love to own it...but it'll never go anywhere near a bottle or cutting target. I leave those to my beaters.
As for the price, I'm sure it's 50% mark up, 30% licensing and 20% actual cost. If this were made by a smith and not a licensed product, I'm pretty sure the price would be around the 500 to the 2000 mark depending on who makes it.

Springs- you're shooting WAY low.. I'd say you'd be starting at $2,000 for a decently accurate and functional replica, and likely maxing in the low to mid $4k... But WETA's is stupendously over-priced.

Yeeeeaaaah... That price just isn't justifiable.
Those tags crack me up, though.

Their other LOTR swords were similarly expensive. They kind of have the right to be, they're as official as you can get. Plus they make like ten of them.
I wish I had the disposable income to have purchased the Ranger Sword when they were available.

Still, I can't shake the feeling that this is mostly intended for very specialized collectors rather than fans of the movie or, you know, people like us. I mean, who is rich enough and a big enough LotR nerd to sink ten grand into getting this sword simply because he really liked The Hobbit and cares that much about authenticity? That's got to be a pretty exclusive customer base.
So, if you actually had ten grand to spend back then, you'd consider that single sword worth it simply because it's official?
Rather than say spending those dineros on a bunch of customs, I mean?

I was saying, if I was well off enough that I had the disposable cash to blow on something like this. If so, then yes, I would have no problem buying a 1 of 10 perfectly done reproduction of a sword I like very much. A custom sword, while nice, is not "the real thing."
I could buy a Fiero that looks like a Ferrari, or I could buy a Ferrari. Huge difference.

Considering people spend roughly about the same, some times a lot more than vintage comic books, I wouldn't be surprised if someone does buy these.
I mean....if I won the lottery or something I probably would too.

One thing I do have a BIG problem with re Weta's Master Swordsmith Collection repros is that if you've bought their other swords before, you basically get dibs on any new reproductions before anybody else.
As preference is given to customers who have previously purchased a sword in the Master Swordsmith's Collection, most of those customers have now secured their swords.
This is something that I just cannot really justify. Weta's official reason is something along the lines of "well if people have bought our stuff they'll obviously want to complete their collection by buying new releases before other customers can snap them up". It makes sense for Weta-- most people who actually buy these MSC swords can probably justify buying more and can probably afford it-- but it doesn't make sense from a customer perspective if they're already knocking off some of what's already a very limited number. It's easier for me to go "well, there's 15 swords coming out, maybe I can save up for one of them" than it is "well there's 15 swords coming out but there's only going to be like 7 left after all the past buyers have snapped up theirs".

I will grant that they are probably worth a lot-- these are essentially pieces of art more than honest swords, in a sense; you don't cut with art, you hang it up on the wall and watch the value appreciate over time. For all that, I'd rather have a functional knockoff that looks similar enough but not identical that I can cut with without freaking out about scratching the finish...

I think if you are that much of a fan price becomes a small obstacle, how many people collect cars or motor bikes, this is an original licensed product that might only come up for sale once in your life. I have ordered swords that appear in my all time favorite book and am currently 2 1/2 years into a 3 year waiting list... for me it's not about the money, I have to get up and go to work every day to pay the bills, if I have to work an extra hour a day to pay for something special so be it. You only live once so I would say go for it if this is your dream sword.

I think if you have the coin and want one - go for it. I have a bunch of Albions and there are quite a few people who think Albions are way too expensive. Guess it just depends on the individual.
