The back of the blade just says "du Klingenthal Juillet 1816." It may have said more once. It's filed off. My question is, did these guys spend their time erasing the evidence of the other's existence?

Were you looking at the one currently on sale on ebay for $1300?
Without being able to see the makers marks on the hilt and blade it is a bit complicated. The Napoleonic AN XIIIs were in production to 1821ish and were supposed to be replaced in 1822 with the new Cav de ligne. There was a great deal of resistence to the transition. In 1854 Napoleon III gave the heavies back their cherished great pallasch. Many of the old ANXIII blades were rehilted as part of this.
If the all the marks tell the tale this could be a rehilted M1816, or more likely this is in fact an M1816 misidentified by the user.
Chattelrault national armory took over from Klingenthal in 1832.

I could be misidentifying the sword. I've been wrong about a lot of things, and if you want to hear about them I can put you in touch with my ex wife.
The hilt is marked "401 2 B." There's an "L" on the blade. There's something else as well but I can't take a picture of it that's worth showing.
It wasn't the one on ebay. I wish I could take a picture that showed some detail that was worthwhile.

www.klingenthal.fr/presentation_marquages.htmThis is a very handy page of makers marks for Klingenthal. The first section are codes used for swords made under the state charter of france. The coulaux index is for custom swords made free lance by klingenthal. The blade and hilt are both inspected and seperately marked. Usually. Inspite of bureaucratic efficiency there are variants that aren't fakes. Yeah, not much more to offer without photos. Somewhere in this section, a few pages back is my write up and photos of my 1854 with photos of it and my ANXIII side by side. forum.sword-buyers-guide.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=8581

Photos will be tough. I somehow misplaced the USB cable for my camera. I tried emailing pics to myself from my phone but it said the address was invalid (?!?!).
I'm reasonably certain I have an 1816 blade rehilted as an 1854. I read your review and the bars on this hilt don't end in the ball-shaped finials as on your ANXIII. The hilt differs from your 1854 only in that the left-hand side of the hilt is missing. The half that would rub up against your side if you were wearing it. It doesn't look like it was ground off. It looks like it was cast that way. It's nicely done; that side of the hilt is scalloped.
