Does anybody here own (or owned in the past) either of the 18th century British infantry hanger replicas made by Windlass, either the Model 1742 or the Model 1751? If so, what are your opinions as far as handling, cutting ability, and quality (as well as authenticity)? I'm mostly into medieval European swords, but I have eyed these for many years in the Dixie Gunworks catalog (since I was in my teens, at least); just never did take the plunge. Personally, I like the looks of the 1751 best, with the half-basket hilt...

Unless I miss my guess, Kult of Athena has the 1751, albeit under the name of English Cutlass.

I'll bet this could be a good one. Windlass shines with shorties. My snap judgment would be: good sword, bad replica (the originals probably started off thicker, and then tapered distally). My only reservation would be the hilt; I associate Indian repros with a certain close-hiltedness.

G Gedney Godwin sells two different versions of both of these hangers: www.gggodwin.com/ProdList.asp?scat=10List first one as Indian and no remark on the second more expensive one. Willing to bet though that one is Deepeeka and the other are the Windlass swords. All I can offer as I've never handled these. The windlass should have decent blades. Don't know about the hilts; easy to blow things on brass hilts.

How do you mean? Two small?

Yup---I thought the American Revolution saber was a touch short in the grip as well, for anything but a hammer grip.

I think Pogo4321 has the 1751. I have sharpened a lot of his swords and I think this was one of them. PM him and see if he has either of these swords.

I just looked at some of my pics and I don't think he has any of them. This is one that I sharpened for him.
