Hey Guys, I just got a Squire sword from DSA. Nice sword even if it is blade heavy. But I've got a couple questions since this is only my second sword and I'm kinda new to all this stuff. First off, if I get it sharpened will that lighten the blade to any noticable degree? Also there are probably about 10 little spots of rust here and there on the blade and I want to polish it up nicely. How do I got about doing that the right way without just scuffing the heck out of the blade? Just lookin' for a little help, thanx.

Sharpening will lighten it very minimally. Take a soft rag and some metal polish and work over the areas with rust. If it is surface rust, it will go away with some elbow grease and it won't scratch the blade. If it is deeper, use some 2000 grit sandpaper over the area. It will lightly scuff the finish (laquer), but only visible at certain angles of light.

Chev - I have not noticed any lightening in my swords after sharpening, but alot more metal will come off of a DSA than will come off a Windlass. I wouldn't want to venture a guess about that, you should check with one of the customizers here or Jason or Brian from AoV; they'd know best, I think.
As far as the rust goes, some emery cloth usually does the trick, but fine grit sandpaper will do as well for stubborn spots and shouldn't mar the blade too much.
EDIT: Ah, Brain beat me to it - but good advice as usual, Matrix.
