Because the world would be a better place if everyone had a little seax!
A while ago I decided to work with the concept of an everyday carry knife since a lot of what is made right now simply does not appeal to me and my historical aesthetic and I came up with the idea to make a seax with a fixed blade, under 3" of edge, and craft it in a way that a viking would say, "hey, that's alright" as well as satisfy the community that enjoys the history behind the knife as well. In modern culture the knife can trigger mixed emotions, usually between tool and weapon. To lighten the mood I came up with the idea of calling the knife a "Little Seax" to lighten the mood and also use the piece as a conversation started for someone who maybe doesn't view the knife as a tool, or hasn't thought of it as such before. There is more to a knife then just an edge, it was often used as a symbol of being free and able. My hope in doing this project was to offer up all these things in one neat little package.
The blade is A2 heat treated to 59-61 rockwell
The grip is walnut with a simple brass bolster
The sheath is leather with bronze hardware
Absolutely all of the work invested in these is 100% handmade! The blades where cut out by hand on a bandsaw and profiled on the belt sander. The cross section was scribed and ground by hand on the belt sander. The stamp was set by hand and stuck by a hammer. The grips were shaped on the belt sander by hand, and the bronze hardware on the sheath was formed by hand with tooling under an arbor press.
These knives are not all identical, each one is unique, each one is it's own, each one is part of production run of 100. The goal was not to become a factory, but to capture the aesthetic of the craftsman who have worked before and make each one just so.
These "Little Seax" are currently available and each week I am completing approximately 10-15 more. They come razor sharp with a fine edge and are ready to be put to use.
The cost of these "Little Seax" is $140 shipped to your door, with your choice in style of sheath, looped or slit.
Please send me a PM if you are interested in picking on up!
