If you think you've seen beauty in a sword, wait until you see this. Words cannot describe this piece. www.templ.net/pics-weapons/223-sword/223-hilt-v.jpgZoom in for a closer look. This was made by Patrick Bárta of TEMPL Arms. I am not a rapier man by any means, but this takes my breath away.

I would think all those holes in the blade would hurt the integrity something terrible.

First of all, I doubt that the holes extend all the way to the tip of the blade. They're probably only on the upper third of the blade.
Secondly, they probably would affect the integrity, because it's a rapier, not a broad sword. It would primarily be used for thrusting, and the cuts it had to perform would not be that strenuous.
Thirdly, I doubt it will ever be used for such practice. I mean, would you use it to cut anything?
And lastly, is that all you can say about it? Look at the engraving!looks at the wire wrap hilt! My god, it's beautiful! This is a work of art and nothing less.

Modern reproduction?
This is nothing. Try taking a look at any of the older treasuries. I will look through my photos of the Munich Treasury (old Bavarian Empire treasury) and see if I have anything. Remember, not all of it was about function. Several considerations were how it portrayed their relative station. Lots of "nobles" went broke trying to live the big, showy life.

Probably yes.
Structural integrity wouldn't suffer much, IMHO.

I doubt anybody would be doing any cutting with it... unless it is birthday or wedding cake one is going to slice. Those cakes can be mighty aggressive, yep.

I like the hilt. It is indeed ornate without being gaudy. If it only had engraving instead of holes...

I disagree with you. Most higher end collecters cut with their swords. Makers tend to be a bit bummed when they here there swords are just going to sit on a wall and gather dust. (Or not gather dust depending on how OCD you are ;D). Obviously it depends on the person and the maker, but in general - these swords see quite a bit of use - moreso than most of us would expect. And dang, no one ever likes piercings! DI, you and I should secede from this land of no appreciation for swords .

I like piercings just fine, I got a couple, just not on sword blades.

But then I'd have noone to flaunt my knowledge to! ;D As for cutting, well, it's a rapier, so there isn't much you can do with it. I wish I could find a picture of the rest of the blade. If it was mine, I'd feed it a pool noodle or two, but not much more.

See, I was right. Holes only on 1/3 of the blade. A little less actually. Ramm, that one looks a little plain. Looks kinda like the Ritter.

It's got some differences that aren't noticable at first glace. Similar blades though.
