Hey Guys, I was just checking around online for some swords that are a little more out of the ordinary and I stumbled upon this sword made by windlass with a black blade and pommel. I personally think its awsome and I'm just trying to see what other people think. Check it out and let me know. www.museumreplicas.com/museumreplicas/detail.aspx?ID=678

I've looked at that one a few times. I'm not sure I'd call it a bastard, personally, as judging by the listed dimensions I'd only get one hand on it in any workable fashion (41.5" overall, 34" blade; figure half an inch for the guard and we have 7 inches including pommel...it'd be close for two hands). I'm also worried about the grip materials, they look very slick in photos, but one would have to handle it to say. Perhaps the raised pattern would aid somewhat. I'm also cautious over the blade finish. I don't know how they achieve that color, but I'd be afraid of removing or staining it... Probably don't really have to worry, but I would, anyway. This one's been around a while, but I don't think I've ever heard of anybody having one. You'd be a bold one if you picked it up and reviewed it for us.

With a very basic calculation, I'm getting the hilt to be around 7.5 in. long. That's far too short, IMHO.
Well dang, the gave the measurments on the site - at least I know I can use ratios and porportions right ;D

I have looked at buying that sword more than once. If you decide to buy it, DO NOT get the sword from that site. You can probably get it much cheaper.

I'm just guessing but they probably gave the sword a black oxide treatment to get the blade that color. That's what we do in my machine shop. And the black oxide is pretty durable. As for the handle length i agree it would probably be too short for a legit bastard sword but all things considered its not too long or heavy to be wielded one handed pretty well. Also I just thought it was different from the norm. thanks so far for the input guys.

I guarantee that grip would make a perfect hand and a half. You've got 7.5", minus o.5 for the cross, and maybe 0.75" for the round part at the end of the pommel. That leaves 6.25" to grip with. Are we forgetting that that style of pommel makes a perfect grip? I do 5.75" for my hand and a half grips which I find to be snug but comfortable; well that ones got half an inch up its sleeve.
My hands are medium to large - 3.74"mm across the knuckles.
I like the black knight look, it's naughty.

It's 7.5 INCLUDING the pommel.
One hand takes up 3.5-4 in for me. Rather cramped.

I've had a look at one of those in person... never got around to handling it however. I like the finish, the darkness of the sword is a nice touch and I found that it gave a degree of depth or otherwise visual drama. As for the length of the grip, its perfect for a single hand and there is just enough to get a second hand without too much discomfort - I'd not use it for extended amounts of time, but it could be done if there was a need. Simple and elegent... I've a mind to see if the one I had a gander at is still in shop :S
I'd take it.

Alright heres a pictorial. My hand and half leaf blade has a 8" overall hilt construction. That includes the cross and the pommel. You can see here I can fit both hands on. It may look a bit awkward coz I was photographing and trying to show the hilt etc, but it is comfortable to use with a full two hands, due completely to the scentstopper pommel. If you lose half an inch you'd just wrap your pinky on the round part of the pommel. It's fine. I tried moving mu hand down 2cm on this and it would still be fine.

yup, that'd do just fine Brenno.. similar to my longsword hilt, however I've about 7ish inches of grip with another 1" and a bit on the pommel *shrugs*.
*edit, yeah Reliks is in town ;D gotta go there and unload some cash shortly..

both my windlass bastard and boromirs sword are about 8 " hilts and my hands fit on there comfortably, just like Brennos pics. But thats the true nature of a bastard sword....essentially its a one handed sword with enough room for a second hand if need be. if you want to use 2 hands all the time and be able to space your hands out to get leverage go for a long sword. I too like the look of this sword. though 41.5" is pretty long for a one handed sword....good thing its under 3 lbs.

Brenno, you look a bit cramped in that pic.
NOTE - THE FOLLOWING IS NOT MEANT TO OPEN UP A CAN OF WORMS ABOUT SWORD GRIPPING!
Many masters prefered to have space between their hands in order the give more leverage to their sword. That's my prefered grip on longsword/h&H/two handed swords.

It looks like the Elven King sword from Lord of the Rings. It's much nicer, though.

I have to agree with brenno as far as the grip and hand situation goes. I have a shrewsbury and the handle turned out to be significantly longer than i thought its was and though it's definately not a 2 hander the grip length and pommel shape fit two hands nicely. Great feedback so far everyone. Thanks.

I just think theres a difference between 2 handed/longsword and an H&H. A hand and a half or Bastard sword is exactly that...meant for one hand with room to squeeze in another...if you added length to the hilt to be able to space your hands its no longer an "H&H" its a 2 hander. all in all I think this one is a good example of a true H&H sword.

Oh please for the love of barney the purple dinosaur....
Not this conversation again!
(All I'm saying is that it seems too cramped - for ME!. Now I'm out, I don't want to get into age old aguments ;D)

I was planning to buy that sword last year but when I saw it in person I didn't like it. It handled very well with one hand, I have small hands so it was more than enough space for two hands, but I didn't like the color. In the picture it has a metallic shine but in person it had no shine at all, like it was painted with a black pen... But if you don't mind the lack of "metallic" shine, you will like the sword very much. Handling is very nice. (I couldn't really say what I want in English, but I hope you understand what I mean.)
