I'm loking into these european swords and they're pretty attractive to me.
I only study and know about Japanese and Ancient European swords, so I dont know much about these Medieval European sword.
Can someone please recommend to me a blade with good balance, edge retention, durability, cutting ability, and attractiveness to add to my collection of swords?
Thank you very much

Do you have an approximate budget? What kind of blade do you prefer? If you have a fair amount of money, go see the Albion Sword site, they have gorgeous swords. Even if you don't, it might help clarify in your head what you are looking for as they have a wide variety. Ancalagon www.albion-swords.com/ (look at the next generation line, it's the most diverse).

well im looking for a sub $300 medieval sword. Albions are too expensive. I've been looking into the darksword armory swords but they dont come sharpened which really brings my interest down. What about the Generation 2 swords or the Cold steel hand and a half sword?

The cold steel hand and a half has a history of pommel malfuntions. It's unfortunate as I really like the look of that one.

Darksword swords are thicker and heavier than the other swords mentioned below. They are very strong and will hold up to a large amount abuse (anything you want to cut, they will cut). Arms of Valor offers a sharpening service for the Darksword swords.
Gen 2 swords have excellent handling and are great cutters for light to medium targets. Most of their swords will hold up to a good amount of abuse, but some of the hand and a half designs had problems in the past. Those have been corrected. In my opinion you can't go wrong with a Gen 2
Windlass Swords are known for their flex. They are usually very light and well balanced, but tend to be over flexible on some of the longer swords. Quality can be hit or miss (fittings and straightness of blade), but once again not to plug AoV too much they inspect each sword before it is shipped and tend to catch all but the most minor of defects.
Hope that helps. If you end up with questions on a specific sword post or e-mail and I will give you a personal review of that sword.

Jason yeah im looking into the Darksword armory Two Handed Medieval Sword and the DSA Two Handed Gothic. Which would you prefer in terms of blade strength, beauty, and historical accuracy? Are the Arms of Valor sharpening services good?

The Gothic is a historical recreation, and is by far and away their best handling blade. The product is backed up, the service is excellent, and the sharpening is top notch! www.swordsofvalor.com/DSAGothic.html

I'm sure i will be very pleased with this sword after christmas when I get the money. I have both of those and without question the Tenchi is going to cut better. The DSA Gothic does not have a sharp edge so you will have to use a sharpening service or do it yourself. I put the edge on my Gothic and the Tenchi is still the better cutter. Now thrust and stabbing? Gothic wins hands down.

You can polish it out (the sharpening bevel) with some high grit sandpaper if it doesn't appeal to you aesthetically. Not to mention, the flash is reflecting off of the beveled edge more so than it will in normal light.

Brian, how hard is this to do? Polishing it out, I mean.

Brian, how hard is this to do? Polishing it out, I mean. It requires a bit of work, and it never matches the flat side of the blade just to forewarn. If you take a sanding block, and not use your hand you avoid sanding the flat side of the blade. Plus, by only using your hand it increases risk of running it along the sharp edge. You could start with a low end of 1000 grit and run it up and down the beveled edge until you see a complete conversion from rough to smooth. Then you move up to 2000 grit and do it until you see a complete conversion from smooth to shiny. Do this for each side of each edge, and it should take about 15 minutes. Cosmetically it is more aesthetically pleasing to eye. There just isn't any great way to hide a beveled edge, so polishing it up to a good shine looks far better than a sharpened edge. Also, an experienced sharpener can round, or blend, the beveled edge into the flat side. Then it is just a matter of sanding the sharpened edge into the flat, but this requires some practice to avoid sanding farther into the flat than you need to.
