Update from Gus: I talked with Gus today and he asked me to put up a quick status on the SBG AT1315 swords, so here it is.
- All blades except one are almost ready. About half are finish ground, the other half will be finish ground as soon as new abrasives arrive later this week and the weather allows.
- Some hilt components still need to be finished.
- He plans on working without interruptions through the holidays, with no Navy work, to finish all but one SBG sword.
- Anticipate shipping first half of the 1315s first week of January.
- Possibly delaying the Australian swords until last to sort out the recent problems with customs.
There is a problem with one 1315. The blade has a small void that is a little too deep to grind out. Gus is uncomfortable letting it go out. So he's wondering if someone who ordered a 1315 would like an AT1557 instead. This is a Christian Fletcher version of the 1557 (shown to illustrate the blade shape and grip length only). Not that anyone has to change their order, but there will likely be a delay getting the last 1315 finished since it will require starting a blade from scratch. Personally, I would have done it myself if I had known in time. One of my next swords from him will be a 1557. In fact, if anyone decides to take the 1557 instead, you'll likely be getting mine and I will wait for another to be built.

Thanks for the update, Mike! Now I can quit looking for the UPS guy for a few weeks! I'd like to help out, but that 1557 is just too pointy for my tastes. I'll stick with the 1315.

I'd consider cancelling my order if it helps him. I'm not that keen anymore as I ordered that before I started making & could use the money for tools in my sword making ventures. I'll try emailing Gus...

recent problems with customs? What problems has he had? I've had a sword order thru every 2 weeks and no probs at all. I'll happily be the last one to go out as I'd like to get a wood core scabbard made for it before its sent. ShooterMike, who's the best to send it to?

Mike, Any update on this? Anyone offer to swap the 1557 for the 1315? Can still be done, and I just got an MS2103 back {customer decided he didn't want it}. That could be in on this too........

Not Oz customs...... there's a thread elsewhere here where Paul says US customs requested a sword back. Before shipping to Oz, I want to make sure things'll go thru without a hitch. I think it will, as I usually use USPS......

Where things stand at the moment is two of these shipped, two at Tink's for scabbards, seven "semi-finished". There's still four blades that need to be taken this far, but its that "abrasives" issue.
I'm going to shoot Shooter Mike a few photos in the morning. The blade with the void will be in a couple of those photos. The void is near the edge, close to where the fuller breaks out. If it was shallow, I could "sharpen" the thing away. But its pretty deep, the deepest part is right at the centerline of the blade. Just eyeballing it, its 1.5 mm by 1.25 mm {.06 in by .05 inch}. The blade seems structurally sound, except right at the edge there, where a good whack on something hard would likely distort the edge, as there's no support right behind the edge there. There's no brittleness there, no cracks. Just a pit........
I've been a little more than a little unresponsive since Nov 16 {day machine was paid off}. I'm going to try and at least get back online two days a week. I see PM's from late November that I never looked at, as I really haven't been back since then....

Well, I for one am in no hurry. It will get here when it gets here. Won't be able to put it to use for a while, anyway. So, take yer time, Gus, and fret not.

Gus sent me this to post last Friday. But it went to my spam folder and I just noticed it today. As of last Friday, here are 7 of the SBG 1315s in-progress. Gus said these needed about 4 hours more grinding to finish. I presume that means as soon as he gets 4 hours of sunshine these will be ready for assembly and shipping. On a personal note, I took mine in a sort of "rough finished" state with the intent of cleaning it up myself. I will never do that again. A word of advise...be happy to wait for him to finish the sword. I kinda wish I had...

Why do you think I'm in no hurry? The clump in the middle of that shot is working some crazy illusion on me; I can't tell which sword is on top or where one sword crosses another. I even got my good glasses back.
