Hello. I am looking to buy a functional fantasy sword. I looked through the DSA LoTR inspired swords and I like Faenor's sword, The Sage, and the Witch King's sword. I read the review of Faenor's sword and am still not sure what to go with. The hang up with me for the other DSA fantasy swords have been their weight. Faenor's weight seems more manageable and realistic. Has anyone handled the Sage or the Witch King's sword? I can't seem to find much information on either of them. Other than those I was looking at the BKS Fantasy Scimitar at Kult of Athena. It's a little expensive for what I am looking to spend, $300-400, but I hear BKS makes good stuff so I might shell out a bit more if anyone thinks it would be worth it. I'm open to other thoughts and suggestions too. Thanks guys.

I'm also looking at the Witchking's Sword. It looks amazing however the weight is no real concern to me. I believe I'm going to order one later this month and see if I can't get a few custom additions to it. (Mainly a peened pommel and a few more inches on the blade so long as it doesn't run the price up much.) I've heard the Sage is a good solid sword as well and it does look very nice. Haven't heard much on Faenor though.

The witchking is a good sword by DSA's standards. Handles well the only problem is the fittings... even if they do match the original design they are the lowest quality part of this sword.

Morsus if you do end up getting it let me know how you like it. I assume since you would want a peened pommel that the Witch King sword pommel is threaded by default. Do you happen to know the weight of the Sage? I couldn't find it on DSA's site. What is wrong with the fittings on the Witch King's sword? Just low quality metal or something else? Would you recommend it as an over all piece Enkidu?

I Own the Dsa Ranger and had the Dsa Flame of Angels both are really good solid fantasy swords. The Ranger is heavy but is well balanced and handles vey well. The cross guard is really nice for a production sword.Good luck with your purchase.

Yes i would recommend it. The problem with the fittings is that they were made with a... weird metal. Very bright and shinny when polished and quickly turns to a dull grey color. The cross guard is a tad too big also. One thing they got right is the handle, DSA tends to make their handle too big which undermines the control you have on your your blade, but with this one its perfect, its long and slim; very nice. Another good point is the blade simply put its one of their best made blade of all their offerings.
Its still a DSA, it stills lack tapering and its a bit too heavy, but it does handle well.
Keep note that I handled the damascus version made a couple of years before they put this one in their catalog, so some of my observations might be a little off but the specs I see on the website are almost the exact same as the one I handled so I wouldnt worry too much.

Thanks for the info Enkidu. You may have sold me on it haha.
I heard that the weight of the DSA ranger is carried mostly in the handle. Is that true?

Good information about those blades. I am not tall, about 5' 8". Which would suit me better then? Faenor?

Geralt, yes the DSA Witchking pommel is originally threaded at the very end. The only reason why I would prefer to have a peened is because I don't plan on doing a whole lot of cutting with it so a more fixed pommel would serve me better I believe rather than a threaded which may be ideal if someone is doing a lot of cutting; mainly because it can then be adjusted if it bend or such sort. I just don't anticipate having such a problem because I don't think I'll cut a ton with it.
Also, should I purchase it, I will let you know how it feels and handles and all the such. After a glance at Kult of Athena, the weight of the Sage sword is 3 pounds, 12.5 ounces. Which is considerably lighter than the Witchking for roughly the same lengths.
I'm also of a similar height around 5'9, 160 pounds and I've handled claymores before rather decently. I found it wasn't so much my height that made a difference but the build of the sword. One was pretty solid and it wasn't too heavy though I didn't swing it. (I was in a shop.) One was a cheaper sword (not my own) barely able to be dubbed battle-ready in all honesty and the blade was very flimsy. From every review I've read of DSA, this should not be an issue at all with their products. Either way, if I don't have the sword this month, I definitely will by the Spring/Summer and even if I can't get the pommel peened, I'd still like a few more inches on the blade as I view the Witchking's sword as a greatsword and I believe it would be a much nicer size at 55. The extra weight does not concern me on the whole because as said, not a ton of cutting with it.

I was pretty surprised on how "short" the Witch King sword was. Considering the length of the handle a longer blade makes sense.

I have a Windlass Raptor, and I love it. Looks brutal, feels brutal, slashes brutally, stabs brutally - something Drizzt would carry.

The Witch-King's grip is the length of the original prop, but the blade is much shorter, 36". I think that has something to do with their heat treating as all their blades top out at about that long; I suppose their furnaces aren't very long or something.
If you want a good fantasy sword, regrettably there's very few functional options out there before going custom. Windlass has a few decent pieces if you like their style, though, such as the Heron-Mark Sword and what not... there are a very few other manufacturers such as Gen 2/Legacy Arms, and Valiant Sword Shoppe has their Warden, but yeah. After that, DSA is about it.

Well I figure a blade around a 30" would fit my physique based on your suggestions Findlithui. The sage is 36" which is a lot longer than I should go for, but the other swords I was looking at were all about the same length. Faenor's sword is a few inches shorter. I like the Sage more so I will probably go with that. Anyone know if the folks at DSA would do a different color leather wrap? I am not a huge fan of brown.

Just curious, do you have the older Sage or the newer version? I really like the newer version now that Eyal widened the shoulders out a bit more like the movie version.
Really intrigued to see what you're doing to it.
