the sword has an eagles head, measures 21 3/4" from tip to end of eagles head, blade is 16 3/4" long- has some markings but not fully readable and i have no knowledge of what it could say- maybe one of you can help me- thanks

Probably a European hunting sword. These were being made into the 20th century, although there are lots of 19th century examples around on the market. The quillons are broken, and it probably had a clamshell guard, now missing.
Language might be German; the word on the end of the middle line looks like "für".

It could be Fur- in fact, in Latin, fur means thief. But I was thinking that it might also say Felix (lucky) just without the e. In Latin, often, you abbreviate long words with just a few letters. However, it is probably more likely to be German than Latin, considering the time period and style of the sword. Still, there is a chance that the owner was educated in the Latin arts, and names his sword "Lucky", or "Thief". Still, I suppose that's just wishful thinking.
