I was thinking of buying this sword, www.ebay.com/itm/Carbon-Steel-Qi ... b2834#shId anyone own it? is it junk? i thought i would ask before i blow almost 70 dollars, they say it is carbon steel and able to cut tatami mats, are there any good swords like it for under 100 dollars? when i say good i mean not going to blow apart when i cut something with it "update" did some reading on other sites. it is a rat tail tang!! can anyone recommend a good non rat tail tang, double egged sword in the sub 100 dollar range, never got the whole welded rat tail thing ,seems to me you could just as easily machine the tang and sword from one piece and not have to weld it.

Have you seen a photo of the tang? I've only managed to find a photo of one with the pommel removed, and it looked like the standard jian tang. The problems with the standard jian tang are that they are usually thinner than they should be, often have a sharp (i.e., square) transition to the shoulders, and IMO worst of all, get no (or almost no) support from the grip. Thin enough so many would call them a rat-tail tang, but much thicker and wider than the rat-tail tangs on cheap SLOs. Not welded on, forged as integral to the blade. That's usual for cheap jian, and I don't expect this to be different from other cheap jian. (Similar tangs can be found on cheap dao as well.) They can be OK for cutting if you fill the grip core with epoxy or epoxy putty to provide support. Never as good as something made with a better-designed tang, but functional.
If you don't like the tang on this, you probably won't like any jian in that price range. More accurately, "almost any". Some of the fake antiques on ebay have good tangs and blades, but you never know until you pull it apart and check. On the cheap fake antiques, the fittings are junk.
If you want better, you either need to get lucky, or step up something like the Hanwei Cutting Jian or the Cold Steel gim.
