I have been looking online about Choji oil since I just purchased a Cheness Tenchi. I thought Clove oil was a substitute for Choji oil, however it looks like choji oil is made from Clove oil. If Choji is not a type of oil what does the word Choji mean? By the way so far the Tenchi looks like it is very high quality with no defects that I can see. Matthew Miller 2nd Dan Tang Soo Do

Choji oil contains, but is not wholly made of, clove oil extract. It's basically mineral oil with a hint of clove oil. If you search the web, you can probably find a recipe on how to make your own. But you're probably better off just buying some.
Not exactly sure what "choji" means, to be honest I always thought it meant "clove."

Hi matthewmiller. Congratulations on your purchase! As mentioned above the oil of cloves is added for the scent, nothing more. Only the price goes up! One can use any good mineral oil, WD4, Ballistol, wax (for longer storage). Sewing machine oil is very good and is cheap. Choji is not needed. I also do not know what the word Choji means, just throw it in Google Translate and see what happens! I just imagined what a huge Japanese army of old must have smelled like, huge clouds of Choji! No wonder the invading Mongols went back home. Blach! On a more serious note, if you want Choji at all cost, just make it yourself. Much cheaper. Buy cloves and crush them or buy clove oil. Put some in mineral oil. let it stand for some time. Filter the end product with coffee filter or piece of pantyhose, old shirt. Enjoy!

Choji oil is 99% to 99.9% Light mineral oil with just a very small amount of clove oil added. Just 1%-.1% clove oil. The reason for the added clove oil is to know it is not cooking oil. The smell let you know it was for swords only. Light mineral oil is all you really need, and one of the best sources for this is sewing machine oil. The reason is they tend to stick with just light mineral oil and not add anything.
There is a lot of stuff saying Choji means butterfly in reference to some character on a TV show, however no Japanese to English translator seems to be able to translate Choji into an English word. So I sort of doubt Butterfly is a real translation.
The Manga wiki the charater's page has this about his name's meaning

Pretty sure choji means clove. The choji hamOn is supposee to have elements shaped like clove seeds, hence the name.
