I just opened up my new Tenchi today. First of all, I am a 2nd Dan Blackbelt in Tang Soo Do and I have been competing in forms with a Masahiro Cherry Blossom for about 5 years now. The Tenchi Is my first Cutting sword. I have not had a good chance to do a close inspection of the Tenchi yet but at a first glance it appears to be without flaws. I new from the reviews on the sword that Cheness used cheaper fittings in order to place more value in the blade itself. From what I can see so far is the fittings all fit very well. One thing that surprised me was to see the Saya without the Bone cap at the mouth of the saya. Sorry I forgot the name of this part in Japanese. Doesn't bother me since if you re-sheath the Katana correctly it should not make a difference. One major difference between my Tenchi and my Masahiro is the weight. The Masahiro has a very neutral balance so It works for my weapons forms, whereas the Tenchi (without Bohi-Fuller) is definately blade heavy, on the other hand it is a cutting sword. Naturally like any good beginner at cutting I brought the cardboard box outside to see if I could cut it. It took me at least 5 minutes to get the box to stand on end without falling over. Finally I got the box standing, backed away slowly so I would not knock it over and held the Tenchi high above my head. I made sure not to grip the tsuka to tight so I could maintain control and executed a right to left downward diagonal cut straight through the box. The bottom half of the box remained standing on the wall. unfortunately and quite to my ambarrasment the Tenchi flew right out of my hands and landed in the dirt off to my side. I am glad to say there was no damage to the Tenchi, only my pride, luckily. Don't know if I will tell my master that part. Actually guess that I have to.
So far I am very pleased with the Tenchi and will write further when I have had the time to get used to the Tenchi and cutting.
