Hi, I've been lurking for some time now, trying to decide on a certain first sword. Im looking for something that i can depend on, for both offense and defense, I will be carrying it with all my bug out gear. i have a few ideas here, if you could give me your opinions, or other recommendations i would greatly appreciate it. www.cashanwei.com/product/tactical-katana/sh2462www.ebay.com/itm/120912492701?_t ... 97.c0.m619 www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... +Wakizashi now these are just my ideas, im completely open to any suggestions! Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for being an awesome forum! ~172Flyer~

For a bug out bag, I'd go with the tactical katana. With a regular katana, I'm not too sure if it'd take enough of a beating and come out intact, with the ito wrap and wood tsuka core and all. The tactical katana has the benefit of a plastic handle, and I think that makes a big difference. There're also tactical wakizashi out there, which I think would work better as katana might be a little too long in closer environments.

Thats what i was thinking too, the only place i've found the tactical Wakisashi is on the actual Cas website, are there any other sites out there that might have better prices? Cas wants 210.00 and ive read about them going for 140.00.
Thank you!

I would suggest since your going for BOB sword, going for a waki, the smaller size is more a functional size for carry in a tactical situation. Though I would recommend the CAS Hanwei Tak Waki www.cashanwei.com/product/tactical-wakizashi/sh2432Over the Windlass tak waki. Though you can protect a standard katana tsuka with a good water resistant bag, having a low maintenance can be a good idea though and a tactical waki would be a good option. Another option from what you listed, though I have heard they are not to be found new right now. The Hanwei Bansheekultofathena.com/product.asp?item=PC2126For a good review about these cool swords, see www.sword-buyers-guide.com/banshee.htmlThere are also other cool swords, like some great tactical gladius out there, that would make not just good BOB swords, but be effective machete or wood choppers. I will quote myself from the Prepper/Survivalist swords thread forum.sword-buyers-guide.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=13743 for some other options, including tactical gladius.

Other manufacturers of a tac-wak are Munetoshi (swordnarmory) and Honshu (United Cutlery).
Those are the only ones I've seen so far besides the CAS Hanwei.

Those busse's look awesome, I've read a lot about them, and yeah that price is high! I'll go check out those two sites. I'll see if anyone's selling that banshee too, I haven't heard anything about them. I appreciate the help

Always glad to help out. There are a lot of great nontradtitional swords (tactical) out there but there are a lot of gimicky ones you have to sort of wade through to find the good ones.
I know one of these days I will get one of those Busse gladius swords. They are amazing. I wish they did not discontinue them, they are one of the better modern takes on gladius.

where do you live that you want a sword for protection? Keep in mind without lots of training and years of practice you will likely hurt yourself before your opponent has a chance to hurt you. My suggestion would go to a Tanto Knive They are very strong, sharp and easier to carry. Keep in mind even in self defense you will go to jail if you use either of these. Nothing beats learning the signs of danger and avoiding them in the first place. Perhaps try some Martial Arts. I am a 2nd Dan Blackbelt in Tang Soo Do, a Korean style and I know I could protect my self if needed. Remember there is nothing in your pocket that is worth dying over. Matthew Miller

I ended up ordering a Tac-wak from kultofathena, i've heard they ship fast, but its been almost a week and I've heard nothing back. So we'll see!
And IF i ever use this, it would take a major national/worldwide changing event, and there definitely wont be any "Jails" left. I have plenty of street smarts, and i can read people like a book, just by their actions and body language, so it would be for a situation where i set the terms, not where i go in blind.
I appreciate all the help, and replies. once again thanks for being a bad-ass forum!

Well I just got a call from kult of Athena and they said shipping up to alaska would be $30. I had ordered the Tac-Wak from them, but I've cancelled it for now, does anyone have any other sword sites that offer cheaper shipping? I'm in North Pole Ak.

Thanks a lot Aussie-rabbit! I'm looking at the munetoshi now. And it looks like they have free shipping.

their shipping isn't free for me in Canada- I think it's just the lower 48. $30 to ship is pretty cheap for that tac wak.
