Ok guys, I have it narrowed down to about three katanas to choose from, 1. Is the amazing SBG custom 330.00 katana, a beautiful sword that I believe would serve me very well, only problem I can see is that it may take a long time to get one, I'm not sure when orders are being taken for the next batch and then it's 90 days after that, no big deal I'm sure it is worth the wait, and I can always get another beater to keep me occupied until it comes. 2. Is the Hattori functional art folded 220 series in the SBG Store, It looks nice and for the price I can always change the fittings and Ito to my own taste, It appears to be differentally hardened but it didn't say for sure in the add? It isn't the exact sword I want, I want a 29 inch DFT10 or 1095 + folded blade, with my own fittings. But it is very nice, especially for the price and could be customised and no wait, 3. Is a Huawei blade, the one I want is more expensive and I'm not sure about the whole buying one off ebay thing even though they come from Huawei, The one I really like is right at 400 bucks, only because of the polishing on it and I'd still have to find the right fittings I want, they didnt really have the ones I like. And it would probably be just for display as the level of polishing on it is something I'd be afraid to mess up cutting with. So I am really thinking about getting a cheap beater, maybe a Musashi practical??? And just waiting for the next batch of SBG customs, but It could be July before that happens lol, What do you guys reccomend? Thank you

That is a difficult choice. I personally would not recommend the Hattori. I've ever only really heard poor things about them from the few i know who have bought them. I'd opt for either the SBG or the Huawei. I'd lean towards the Huawei slightly, but I can definitely hear what you're saying on not wanting to jack up the polish. Not cutting with a sword kind of defeats the purpose, and if it doesn't have the exact fitting you want I'd say pass. $400 is a lot to spend one something that you'll have to spend more on later, hahaha. That really leaves the SBG. I think that the next batch is going on sale in Feb, but don't quote me on that. For a beater, I'd say that a Musashi Shirakawa or a Jubei(available at Swordnarmory) would be good. For $175 there is the Ronin Katana Dojo. I have one and it's really great. Also, for $175 you can get a Musashi Shirakawa with a custom ito wrap done by frankthebunny from his site, cottontailcustoms.com/About

Thanks Adrian, I thought the Ronins were like 275+, but I had no idea Frank sold stuff at his site, I knew he is the man to see about custom wraps, but I will definately check them out! Yeah I never even heard of Hattori's but I figured since it was on the SBG store it had to be a quality item. But I'd rather not take a chance if they have a bad rep. The Huawei is just to pretty to use as a backyard cutter it would be more of a heirloom type thing, but I know how that goes, I bought a 2, 500 over&under trap shotgun with gold & silver inlays and beautiful 5a wood on it and never shot it, ended up trading it for 3 other guns I could use without fear of scratching them up in the field, I got more than my moneys worth out of it but it killed me to just look at it and not use it. Hauwei has some cheaper blades that are steal very nice, I actually just about pushed the button on one today but I really want to get the right blade for me and the more I think about it, I think a good cutter and a display only sword are What I need to fit the bill for what I want, that way I have something I'm not gonna freak out about if it gets a scratch and something to put on top of my display case, I have a bit of OCD when it comes to my toys, my truck, bass boat all have to be spotless lol, same with my guns, that's how I got into being a Duracoat applicator, I can't stand scratches and it protects them even through the toughest conditions, now if they would just make a color to match my truck I'd shoot it with duracoat too lol

From what little I've heard about the Hattori, it's not too great. I also highly doubt it is differentially hardened, I believe it has a wirebrushed hamon.
The SBG custom is a nice choice, although the wait time is a major point that, for me at least, is hard to swallow. I'm usually a patient guy but not so much when I'm spending over 300 on something.
The Huawei is definitely nice - although the polish is would definitely degrade over time the more you cut with it. But...a sword is meant to cut, and I think someone here has a signature that says "a sword isn't a sword until it cuts" - I sort of agree with that. I like to think that, through cutting and acquiring some scratches/nicks/chips etc, the sword gains a certain sense of character.
Out of all 3 I'd go for the Huawei, although since the SBG custom doesn't open till Feb'...you can get the Huawei now, and then save up for the SBG later. Or you can get as adrian.jordan suggested, a Musashi Shirakawa that will serve as a good beater, it also won't break the bank so you will still have money left over for another, more fancier blade.

Very good advise from all of you guys, I believe that you are right that a sword is ment to be used and that fancy of a blade would not get used by me, I know how I am, when I have something thats very nice I baby it, my truck is a 2003 model and looks like new, it barely has 60,000 miles on it, and it got most of those going to Texas and back on fishing trips, and to Nevada and back. My dad teases me that I will wash the paint off a vehicle lol. But that's just me can't change now, I'm too old and set in my ways. If I get a regular hauwei blade without the fancy fingerstone polish I would be far better off and happier. I can always polish it up myself if the scratches bug me too bad and not ruin a fancy blade.

I third the vote against the Hattori.
I would message Jacky at Huawei with pictures and descriptions of the exact fittings you want. Just because they are not showing on the auction page doesn't mean he can't get them. For a $400 sword I'm sure he'd try to find you the fittings you want. Be specific about the metal you wnat them made from, as well as providing pictures.
