I am looking for recommendations on bucklers. The kit I am putting together is for a Wars of the Roses period foot-soldier, with padded jack (not made yet, but I have a pattern), jack chains on the sleeves, arming sword, sallet, and rondel dagger.
I'd like to add a buckler to that set. I have one by GDFB, but it is their 15" model, and is made of 14-gauge steel and HEAVY. The 9" version of this shield is tempting, price-wise, but I do not know if 9" is too small for a decent buckler, and using 14-gauge steel would still make it heavy for its size. Making one myself is problematic unless I make it out of wood (authentic???), as there are no suppliers of sheet metal heavier than galvanized ductwork metal in my area and if I pay shipping on sheet metal I suppose I may as well buy a ready-made buckler.
Anybody got any good suggestions or recommendations?

Fellow forum member Razor has the 9" buckler. You could shoot him a PM with questions about it.

Making your own? Not hard at all. I have a few pre-made ones like A&A's Marozzo "square target" and the monstrous spiked Talhoffer (made by I-don't-know-who)--but my favorite one is actually from a shallow stainless-steel mixing bowl with a two-inch lip that I riveted a proper handle to.
Cruise some chef supply stores, not to mention a thrift store or two. Steel bowls of requisite thickness might not literally be a dime a dozen, but not far off from that!

Wood is perfectly adequate for a buckler, and many were made like this. Consider covering it with leather.
I'd say the 9" GDFB buckler is probably just fine for your purposes, though.

Ach, I'm afraid you caught me away from home for the next two weeks. I'll post when I'm back, if need be. But for some measure of similarity, the bowl itself is like a larger (~12")version of this one on Amazon, but with an added flat two-inch lip. www.amazon.com/STNLS-STEEL-MIXIN ... owls+metal As you can see, often rather inexpensive!

Found an 11" one from Mercenary's Tailor for a decent price, and I have heard good things about them. Problem solved!
