Hey, my dad wants to get a pistol, .40 cal or 9mm. looking for smith and wesson M&P with extra clips. we pretty much have decided on one of those, no big difference to us at similar prices, maybe a slight bias towards .40 cal, but definitely a secondary consideration. where would be the best place for North Florida residents to buy?

Any gun store that sell them legally and at a reasonable price, I would say.

Try having a local FFL holder order your dad one, most will do it for a small fee, like 25 bucks over their cost. If you don't know a FFL holder you are pretty much stuck to sporting good stores, The Smith & Wesson M&P's are good value guns, if it were me I'd stick with the 9 mm version, ammo is cheaper and to get the most out of the 40 S&W round( which is basically a low power 10 mm) you need to hand load, I get much better results in accuracy and velocity out of my 40 with hand loads over any off the shelf ammo, even the premium stuff.

I saw plenty of Glocks at my favorite local firearm store this past weekend, even a Model 27 (subcompact 40SW). And they were reasonably priced.
Saw no 9mm or 40SW training ammo on the shelf. It is crazy. The increased demand has resulted in a predictable price increase in ARs, AKs, mags and ammo--simple economics. 4 years ago I thought $400/1000 PMC 55g 5.56 was absurd. It's a bargain compared to what's going rate is today, if you can find it. $800-$1000/1000.
Addendum (1/25)
I may not need any more firearms, but there are always interesting pieces being introduced. With the current influx of new gun owners, I am willing to wait while new folks join the ranks. It will be rough for a while, if bans don't materialize, as demand tapers off. If they do, it's anyones call.
