For a quick rust-fix that probably doesn't even require buying anything, try aluminum foil & water. Seriously. Check out the wikipedia article on aluminum foil, or google something like "aluminum foil rust".
Anyway 1: crumple up a small piece of foil 2: dip in water 3: rub 4: dry immediately, before the water can cause more rust 5: apply your favorite rust-prevention
Its non-abrasive and does not mar the surface of the metal. The foil steals the oxygen from the rust but leaves good steel untouched. You know its working when you see a fine black sludge, which is either aluminum oxide or the iron that used to be in the rust, or some of both.
It works on black rust too, not just red/brown rust. If there is oil on the blade, vinegar might work better than water. They seem about equivalent on clean steel.
I know it just seems wrong to use rust-causing water to remove rust, so I had to try other liquids. Foil + oil works a little, maybe 20x less effective. But usually do a quick foil+oil treatment after I dry the water off, since I'm going to oil the metal next anyway.

foil and water first, followed by some Mothers Mag polish or Gold-glow or what ever you have, or trip to store for a tube of stainless-steel polish, finally a wipe over with some clear floor wax to add a little protection.

Rubbing Alcohol works. Just wipe it down to remove any harmful surface rust. Then oil. No water needed.
