I'm in the market for a new sword, and this time, I think I'll go with something western. What I really want is a short sword, something around 23", with a stabby point, but not a gladius. Oh, and preferably under $150. Unfortunately, my only options seem to be the Windlass Coustille or the Valiant Armory Crecy Shortsword, neither of which suit me. www.armsofvalour.com/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=AOVL&Product_Code=54-031&Category_Code=MBActually, I love the Coustille, but it's a little too short for me. More like a big dagger. But I love the style. Anyhow, recommend me, recommenders of recommendations!

Hmmm, no gladius huh?. Well I guess it takes all kinds ![;)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) . How about one of these? ![](http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z111/RicWilly/spartanlakonian.jpg) The Spartan Lakonian short sword used by the Spartan Army, is very effective in close, hand to hand combat. The leaf shape blade is made of high carbon steel. The grip is bronze, with a wooden scabbard covered in leather. Overall: 19 1/4 In Blade: 14 1/2 In Wide: 2 3/8 In Weight: 2 lb Probably a little short for ya, but I like the look of it.

Have you thought about a VIKING sword? Sorry, had to suggest it.
If you're looking for short swords, the Windlass ones are fine options. I think Windlass also does cool Greek hoplite swords. I'd personally go for a dirk if I was looking for a short non-gladius stabbing weapon. By eliminating the Windlass offerings and the various gladii, you've kind of cut the short sword market in half.
However, I like the look of the Windlass Oakeshott Type XIV. It's a little longer than you specified, but looks optimized for stabbing.

Jake were you molested by a viking at a young age?
Sorry, I just had to suggest it...

Yeah, I read those. Looks like Valiant makes their swords heavy.

Yeah, I read those. Looks like Valiant makes their swords heavy. I handled Tsafa's Dagesse a little. He likes it. I think it's heavy and a bit clumsy. But to each his own. It seems very durable. I'm considering the Windlass Type XIV...which they still insist on calling a "Type IV" in their newest catalog and website. I wonder if they realize the Oakeshott Typology starts at X (ten)?

The threats of those fondled by vikings mean as much to me as a tavern maid's fart.

For the record, those can be pretty foul, vile things. Do not underestimate them, Ramm.
Small stabbing sword that isn't a gladius? Devil if I know. The shortest thing I could call a sword would be Windlass' "Type IV" previously discussed. But I'm a biggish fellow, so anything less than 20" is a knife, not a sword.

Eh heheheh, is wittle Wammy too young to get into a bar? Does Wammy need a bedtime stowy?
Anyway, get a dirk or get a bloody Windlass! Or get a shirt of mail, a shield, and a helm and go stand in a bloody shieldwall like a real man, instead of stabbing in a cowardly manner with a short sword!

You appear to be mistaken, Jake. Real men do not know what a shield is, nevermind a shieldwall. And what is this mail and helm of which you speak? Seriously, the best thing I can suggest is to get the blasted false-name or settle for a big knife. Or man up and get a real sword. ![;)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Man up, my ass. I'm a skinny twig-guy, not Andre the Giant. A shield battle would see me getting knocked flat on ass, at which point I would kick my opponent in the groin with a metal shod boot.
To put it in fantasy terms, I'm more of a thief then a fighter. Don't worry, a "real" sword will be forthcoming. Remember, it's not size that matters, but how many times you can stab the guy with it. ;D

I think with the proper technique, once should do it.

Yeah, that was just an expression. To me, thrusting just seems more intuitive, which it is. I'm actually leaning towards the Crecy short sword, which lies just in the realm of being a sword, but handling like a big knife. That is, if it isn't unwieldy and heavy. How would you rate your Valiant viking on wieldibility?
