I recently purchased a Dynasty Forge yanmaodao, and received it in the mail on Friday. I was pleased with the way the sword turned out overall, but there seemed to be a couple of things amiss - 1) Is it normal for the blade to rattle a bit when shaken from side to side ? I suspect that its impact on the tunkou is what causes this noise, and is it an indication that the fittings are in poor order and the sword is unsafe,or is it something which is common with most other swords? 2 ) Might that also result in the sword and scabbard being in greater friction with each other ? This is the first sword I bought, via this website, and I do hope everything turns out in good order ... Thanks! PS - Photos added !

When you said rattle a bit when shaken from side to side, you mean when the blade is sheathed or unsheathed? If it's sheated, it's possible... the fit between the tunkou (habaki) and the scabbard is not perfect... should not worry about it... pretty common stuff with production level sword (no perfect fit - common with Japanese katana as well, I believe).
If you mean the blade can be moved when unsheathed (blade play), then it seems to unsafe in my opinion. The assembly is loose somehow, somewhere and should be inspected carefully before doing any cutting.
However, I'm newbie as well so let's wait for someone with more experience to provide better insight than me.

It rattles on both counts. As you can see in the picture, the blade collar has a gap on one side, due to being larger and misaligned, which leads to the noise.

From the detailed photos this example is possibly factory seconds. The huge gap in the Tunkou and the miss-alighned grip are the obvious causes to your problems, let alone what you would find if you pulled it apart.
This Dao should never have made it out of the factory in my opinion. Perhaps seek a refund or exchange as I doubt that this is a common issue with this particular brand and maker.
Can I ask where you got it from?

I got it from the SBG store. I don't think I would want another Dynasty Forge product in exchange though, would preferably save up for something with a little more quality control !

I guess I am going to return it for a refund once I get to know how to go about that. Thanks for the help with recognizing the problem !

mine had the same messed up blade guard. it was twice as wide on one side. on mine it looked like somebody could not easily place it in the scabbard so they jammed it in anyway and broke the mouth of scabbard. Paul refunded the 60$ return shipping and just received my refund of the sword today.
i would buy from the sbg store again but plan to avoid dynasty forge. there is no way they could have not been aware of the defects but they shipped the swords to us anyway
looks like huanuo fittings but i am skeptical it is the same manufacturer given the zero qc

Wow, dodged a Bullet there, I was so close to buying one. Dynasty Forge is off my list
Huanuo might be off the list too, I've been hearing their QC has gone down the toilet recently. I was advised by a forum member that the CS swords were a better bet because at least CS has some standard of Quality control. Sad to see Huanuo dropping the ball lately, and now Dynasty forge

Yeah I agree with you about the dangers of shoddy QC, but my Huanuo oxtail Dao has almost supernaturally wonderful balance and is put together flawlessly. Buying their products from seven stars trading instead of Dynasty Forge is the simple solution to avoiding bad QC on their blades. Scott Rodell and his wife preinspect prior to shipping and do replacements or refunds if something slips through. Same deal with buying cold steel blades: I would never buy one except from Kult of Athena. When you get a cold steel blade that is Made well (by Huanuo), you get an awesome sword that is well worth the price. But as Ryan from KoA will tell you, the QC done by cold steel is far from perfect. Ryan told me that there's problems with lots of the blades he receives from cold steel. Despite the pre-inspection, I managed to get one from Ryan that had a flaw at the base of the blade near the handguard. Thanks to KOA's awesome customer service I was emailed a return shipping label the same day, packaged the lemon up and sent it back to him, and now I have a brand-new perfect condition battle Gim, that is so awesome it's difficult to express how happy I am with it without resorting to reaction gifs.. Lol. So the Takeaway message is that the Huanuo product are well worth buying, but with so many degrees of separation between Huanuo, 1st tier resellers (such as ColdSteel), and whomever you actually pay to ship the sword to you, it is crucially important to buy from someone with five-star customer service. Anything else would be uncivilized TLDR: buy Huanuo products but buy them from kult of athena or SBG-store (for CS or dynasty forge) or sevenstars trading (for un-rebranded Huanuo items)
