Hey all... I'm a Katana guy, but I want to start branching out a bit . I need some help with suggestions for Bowie Knives and Kukris. I don't really have any choices in mind yet and I'm pretty much clue less as to what I'm looking for. The only direction I have more or less for the Bowie knives is this: I just LOVE the way that bowie looks. I'm not looking for that one exactly, lol, but something along those lines in blade profile...maybe not as wide though. For the Kukris, just throw as many suggestions and recommendations as possible. I would like to keep the price under $250, so all suggestion around that area or lower are welcomed. Thanks for the help guys!

Depends on what you want to use it for. Bowies are fighting knives. The reason people say they aren't great for camping is because they are not made for that. They have a clip point and false rear edge so that they have tremendous penetrating power, big belly for slicing and are balance slightly farther back than a good outdoors knife to aid in maneuverability. Kukuri are great outdoors knives. Heavy, with a lot of belly for big chopping power. Not great for penetration(this it will do the job). Asians have been using it to "deal with" enemy personnel for a long, long time, so I bet it works well for personal safety as well. If you are looking for a defense knife, I vote Bowie. Bowies are my favorite knife type ever though, so I am admittedly biased. Here is my personal, all-time favorite Bowie. I can't afford it, but Jeebus is it sweet. www.amazon.com/Down-Under-Knives-The-Outback/dp/B003VAAY02As you can see, it is a 440C blade. Many are put off by that, but remember, 440C well done is considered one of the first "super steels." Another Bowie that I'd recommend would be the Ontario Marine Raider. www.amazon.com/Ontario-Spec-Marine-Raider-Bowie/dp/B001BMTZSY/ref=sr_1_3?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1353823274&sr=1-3&keywords=ontario+marineAt a quarter of the price above, this is a monster. I have one coming in the mail, and I cannot wait! Our friend Scorpion Knives has a few(by "a few" I mean a sh#tload) mean ass knives for sale, many well within you price range. You can rest assured that you'll be getting your money's worth there. traditionalarcherybows.com/They have "inspired by" blades for Predator, Book of Eli, Crocodile Dundee, Resident Evil, and THIS!!! THE SMATCHET! Designed by the OSS and SAS to terrify NAZI's! traditionalarcherybows.com/handmade_wolf_fang_smatchet_short_sword_p99.html

Thanks for the suggestions!
Yea coming from the Katana side, 440 is always a red flag lol. I'm in love with the Resident Evil 5 blade that Chris uses by Scorpion Knives. Do you know of any similar to the Governor's blade from the image I posted, profile wise I mean?

If you go for a kukri, I recommend Kukri House Himalayan Imports ( www.thekhukurihouse.com/). They make really amazing kukris for not too bad a price. Shipping gets a bit dear, but it's worth it. I picked one up from them a while ago and I love the thing. Good thick spine and an edge you can almost use to shave. Pics below. Bowies are harder to pick, in my opinion. The shape of the blade can vary a lot from one to another, and material and functionality can change as well. I got one from Baltimore knife and sword at a Ren Faire, and I like it a lot, but the clip is longer than some and the look is more Bowie knife meets medieval dagger. So poke around a bit, check out amazon.com just to see the wide array, and start making a list of the qualities you want (or don't want) in your bowie. Atlanta Cutlery has a section for both Bowies and Kukris, by the way. www.atlantacutlery.com/c-91-knives.aspx. IMG_1908.JPG IMG_1912.JPG

Forgot to mention, Scorpion will forge you a knife to your specs. Price depends on what you want done, size and finish, but I don't imagine that it costs too much more than one of their stock pieces. Also, fallen can do you up a custom, and I know that he is very fair in pricing. You may want to shoot him a PM. forum.sword-buyers-guide.com/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=470. He's a really cool guy to deal with.

Go for the KH Machete. Heavy as your choices are, you'll really appreciate that one having the butt-end of the handle flare out like a traditional kukri. If I were swinging the others, between the weight and the momentum, I'd be really worried about them sliding out of my hand.
As for the Bowies, I'm from Dallas, so go with the Texas. Couse, I may be a bit biased.

I second the Ontario marine raider. It's a good chopper, it's durable, it throws well, it holds a good edge, and it won't break the bank.

I have Khukuri's and Bowies. The Himalayan Import Khukuri's I have are the Chiruwa, Sirupati and the Ang Khola. They chop like nobodies business, and, are great all around knives too. No Bowie can equal their raw chopping power. It was what they were designed to do.
I have The Marine Raider Bowie, and a number of others. IMO, it's the best bang for the Bowie buck out there. Does whatever you need it to do, within reason. I had a Cold Steel Trailmaster, and, ended up selling it. I still miss that knife, and, would replace were it not for the fact I'm doing the firearm thing now. It was an excellent all around knife. However, at around $135.00 American, the Marine Raider still beats it in the "better bang for your buck" category.
None of those knives will let you down. Their thick where they need to be, plenty sharp, and, all are ready for work.
Have fun choosing!

Nice blade. I decided on going the custom route and will have my custom blade in about a month or so. Its a nice blend between both a kukri and bowie

Maybe a strange question, but a Zombie Tools Felon or Vakra were out of the question?
