Looking around on the web to find out about a new area of interest and collecting, namely helmets, I came upon the beautifull Deepeeka Deurne helmet at KOA: www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... rne+Helmet
Now for what seems to be another Deepeeka version at Armae: www.armae.com/antiquite/Casques_ ... Deurne.htm
To me it seems there is a version at KOA where the leather on the inside of the cheekpieces is held in place with stitching and brass pins, while on Armae the leather is bent over the side of the cheekpieces and sewn in place, with or without the help of glue. The strips on the sides, just above the cheekpieces have the same treadment in both versions, but with the neckplate there are differences again. KOA has a leather hinge, as far as I can see, while the Armae version gets the (glue and) stitching treatment together with buckles funtioning as hinges.
In the Deepeeka catalogue you will see The KOA version, brass tacs all along the cheek- and neckpieces. In this picture of the original: www.romancoins.info/MilitaryEqui ... -late.html
you will see the remains of brass tacs along the left cheekpiece. Is the Armae version the newest incarnation of the Deurne helmet, catering to the re- enactment crowd, making it safe and soft for their rosy baby cheeks? I do not have anything against re- enactors, it seems to be great fun for everybody involved, people tell me, but as far as I can see there is something wrong with the new and improved Armae version, or is it? I hope some people with knowledge of these things are willing to discuss this little matter, so it is made clear which one of these versions is more historicaly correct and collectible. Thank you very much.
