Does anyone know of a sword similar to the cold steel, grosse messer, that is not as heavy ? i would like the handle to be able to be used with two hands if wanted. i am not sure why ![???](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) but all of a sudden my curiosity is turning back to medieval and western swords ? that is not to say i will ever give up my eastern love ! ![;)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) thanks.

There needs to be more choice in the area of single-edged hand-and-a-half or two-hand swords like the kriegsmesser and the grossemesser. I haven't been able to find anything that's sub-$300. But I'm still looking... Of course Albion has three versions of this type, but MY GOD THEY ARE EXPENSIVE!The Soldat (a real grossemesser)The Meister (a real grossemesser that's not in production yet)The Knecht (like the Cold Steel Grossemesser)Closer to affordability are the two-handed sabers from Angus Trim. Still they are in the $500-600 price range. Angus Trim SabersI have this one and like it very much! It's light, fast and both cuts and thrusts like a dream. It is very much like a long, light-weight katana with the false edge sharpened for about 9 inches. So the tip is very light and fast. I really wish someone made something roughly similar for under $300.

There's really only the CS grossemesser in sub 300, definitely room for a competitor to step up and create an alternative.

I'd like to see Gen2 do one...! ;D While there are no Gross Messers in the sub US$300 category, there is a new Falchion that I have been eyeing off recently by Valiant Armoury. ![](http://www.valiant-armoury.com/catalog/54-104_new_falchion.jpg) Looks like fun, and while these haven't yet hit the shores yet - I'm keen to give it a go. Planning on updating the page on Scimitars and slicing swords shortly actually. I'm thinking of grouping together all Western and Arabic Slicers into one (probably too broad) category, which will also include sabres. What do you guys think? (I was thinking originally to give sabres their own category, but this would probably do for now and be easier to add - plus the less categories the better I think).

Yuck, that valiant falchion looks like an utter clunk-mobile. So much unneeded steel in that piece, it's vomit inducing. In fact, it looks like plastic, it's so bloated. Anyone else notice how off centered the crosspiece is? Take a look at that shot where they show the hilt, and stare at it diagonally.
To Paul's idea, I say a firm no. Remember, while they may be similar in function, scimitars and falchions are completely different from one another. Lumping them together would be the same as calling a katana and a kriegscmesser very similar to one another. Why not have "straight swords" and "curved swords" if it's so important to streamline?
Anyways, I've been opposed to lumping falchions and scimitars together, so I suggest these are split. However sabres could go under either category. i.e. - "Falchions and sabres" or "Scimitars and Sabres"

Those pictures look a lot more like artist's drawings than actual photos. I would suggest that maybe the artist drew it a bit more beefy than they really are. If it really matches these drawings, I'm guessing it at 5 lbs or more... ![???](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/huh.png)

It looks like a sword that a certain spiky-haired video game character would use...

I like Grosse Messer, too, but I heard Cold Steel products come with sharpened blade (someone tell me I'm wrong, pleaseee...!), so it's out for me as I'd not be able to get it through the Customs. On the Valiant Armory Falchion, I second Rammstein & Sept of Clan Sinclair opinion ![:-/](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) Definitely a No-No for me..

I still want one BECAUSE it's big and ugly (JUST LIKE ME!!). That is, granting the price is within my reach (doubt it).
Nevertheless, as bulky and clumsy as it may be, I tend to handle bulky and clumsy pretty well. I'll be keeping an eye on this, if only for laughs.

I'm a little iffy about Valiant Armoury, I been eyeing their new gladius. ![](http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z111/RicWilly/54-105_new_roman_gladius.jpg) Thing is I got their old viking ![](http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z111/RicWilly/54-055_viking_sword.jpg) It's really clunky, thick fittings and grip, so's I was kinda waiting for someone else to get one and tell me how it was.

I don't like that Gladius as it is just too far from being representative of the real thing, though as a beater I have no idea how it would handle. I know there is a review of one on on the main page of this site that can take a beating and looks closer to the real deal. I'm going to be getting this one soon: legvi.tripod.com/armamentarium/id261.html
