Hey guys, I am working on refining me neighborhood patrol/bug out loadout. I just got a MOLLE plate carrier and I'm looking for a decent knife to strap on it since I have a lot of MOLLE real estate to work with. I am looking for a fixed blade carbon steel blade with a MOLLE compatibly sheath that can do anything from splitting wood, to cutting down bears (not really). Something that I can trust to not fail in the bush for around 50$ or less. I may end up getting two knives, one for my Bug out bag, and one dedicated to my combat loadout. I prefer Japanese styled blades (curved with a single edge) But I am open to suggestions. Anyways I want it to be able to take some serious abuse.
Thanks guys!

So if it's mainly for combat, depends I think what you train in...
but I think it's hard to go wrong with either Ka-Bar or Kukri

The Kobun by Cold Steel is the first thing that popped in to my mind, all though I'm not sure it's MOLLE compatible. I thought it was a boot knife rig (clip on the sheath.)

Mate I would avoid the Cold Steel GI Tanto, and the Ontario you picked is massive. A smaller Kabar like those suggested or Ontario SP-1 www.amazon.com/Ontario-Marine-Co ... d_sim_sg_4 is what I would go for in that price range.

Well I've decided against it. I guess a tanto style blade is not a priority for me anymore. For some reason the Marine style combat knife does not appeal to me at all. I like the looks of the Becker BK9, but I can't seem to find one with a decent sheath in my budget. I've moved my price to 80$ now.
I'm really wanting a sheath that I can affix to both a belt, and MOLLE webbing. This is a must, if I can buy it separate from the same retailer I'll opt for it. This is a knife I want to be able to use for at least batoning. Thick blade, good strong edge and for sure carbon steel.
Sorry guys, I'm really not a knife guy, but I'm trying to learn. My criteria is stupid, but I gotta start somewhere.

I'm not a huge knife guy and also don't have the budget for hand forged one off's or expensive dutch production blades but I am a bit of a SOG fan. their fixed blade survival/combat knives are affordable and seem to have everything I needed. I'm picking this one up soon - SOG SEAL Pup Eliteit was between this one and the Gerber LMF II, the Becker BK7 or possibly the Cold Steel SRK Aus8A

I've been watching a lot of Nutnfancy videos Frank. He has a TON of knife reviews. I've watched hiking videos where he has taken it out mountain backpacking and it seems to serve him well. I actually kinda like that knife. Mmmm would look good with samegawa and maybe even ito.........
I think for now I am going to make my moroha tanto "Tactical". I'll make one koshirae for display and another for use.

I have experience with the Cold Steel SRK. It's half again as thick as a standard Kbar in a handier size and batons or skins equally well. The kydex sheath has eyelets and a belt loop, so MOLLE attachment is no problem with some P-cord. Not a fighting knife though, I liked it better once I sanded the teflon coating off. Get an older Carbon-5 steel version if you can, those older models were indestructible.

If you have upped the spending limit, and want to baton, I would go with a full tang blade.
Kabar/Becker BK-2 would work, or maybe Ontario Ranger RD-5. Both tougher than you will ever beat them at 1/4 inch thickness, and pretty sure the sheaths would work for you too. I now prefer slimmer and smaller blades, but those two are a hella lotta knife for the dollars and you cant loose.

I actually was handling my friends BK-2 last night. It's a lot bigger than I expected and I could certainly batton with it. I think The RD-5 looks pretty slick as well.
So many knives, I want them ALL!

ESEE 6 or ESEE Junglas.
Not fancy but the Junglas is a short sword effectively but will do the bush work (chuck a folding saw in your bag) when needed, will intimidate and follow through like a boss. Complete value for money.
Will go on MOLLE good. Maybe a little ghey but you could ninja back mount it on the plate carrier back. YEAH haters gonna hate, just be sure edge facing AWAY from neck/scalp when mounted/drawing/sheathing.
Kukri's are great but buggers to sharpen, love em, LOVE EM, but tricky to carry except in belt sheath.

I have to recommend an ESEE of some kind too due to their toughness and forever warranty. If you manage to break it, they replace it no questions asked. Otherwise I would recommend a Buck Hoodlum or Punk or a Fiskars Sissipuukko.

I second that Cold Stell SRK...I have the same MOLLE pad you listed and I keep as a secondary knife for my go-bag a CS Tru-flight thrower. It has drop point and is flat. It is wide enough to baton wood and I keep some zip ties in the bag to make a spear.
Edit: I also use a dremel rotary tool and hand file to make old hack saw blades and Saws-all blades into little survival blades and fishing spear tips. They make excellent fire strikers too.

I have a few blades that might fit the bill in this respect, but the weights aren't quite there. Since I'm getting into khukuri mode, I'd go with this one that I'm having made heavier, with a custom grip/lower quillon. www.thekhukurihouse.com/catalog/product.php?id=313636fc4c1Mine will be 35ozs+/1000g+. Stock is 900g. For me, that's a good weight, and splitting small chunks of wood should be effortless. I'd just have to get a sheath that was MOLLE compatible, if I really wanted it to be integrated that way. For now? Nah ... (Edited 'cuz KHHI updated their site. All their weights are actual now.)
