Just came across this, I didnt know that they tried to get guys to be proficient in the use of a mounted bayonet in similar fashion to a small sword. This kinda opened my eyes to the potential of bayonet fighting. books.google.com.au/books?id=5TF ... &q&f=false Lots of great info, new appreciation from a reliable secondary source.

Yep I've seen this before. Pretty cool huh?
There's a lot of correlation and crossover in concepts and motions, though that's probably true of almost any bladed weapon of length. The smallsword just happened to be used still by some officers and was still within recent memory of the population at the time probably even though firearms had essentially taken over.
