We've all seen them. They look really cool. But did they actually exist? As far as I can see they only evidence of these fantasy like choppers are in...you guessed it...the maciejowski bible! Why would that be? Could the artist(s) have had a really strong imagination? Could he have actually seen these swords in real life? If so, where are they now? Have any been discovered?
Thanks for your help, I'm curious about this!

Hank would know more on this than I would.
The Maciejowski Bible was painted around 1250 AD by Parisian Artist. And as you look at the painting the people are featured in 13th Century attire or armour. But it is painting of the Old Testament of the Bible from Genesis to King David. Only in those paintings do we see this Chopper and other weapons normally not seen.
But, no there are no weapons found that looks like this Chopper.
Now I wonder the same thing. Did the artist know something about Old Testament weapons and what they might have looked like? Or did they see one and it did not survive to be found? I would say there are more questions than hard hands on facts.
But looking through the book you see it in several paintings. So given that time period from Genesis to King David I would say if it actually existed that it could have been a farming tool used as a weapon, possibly? It would have been effective as a land clearing instrument, that made a very effective weapon. IMO.

Just finding another literary/pictoral reference from a different time or place would help corroborate the existence of such a thing. Wondered myself- I picked up two (I think Windlass) of these choppers a few years back on closeout, and have used them for fantasy type stuff so far.
