New shield just finished, No winded topic of historical accuracy of Type, Size, method etc, This is just a Creation ( My interpretation loosely based 7-8th c.) i made using www.yeoldegaffers.com instruction as my template , with some modifications to make it "SCA Legal" & strong for Hema sparring. For SCA events i have always been annoyed by seeing aluminum or wood shields with just plain black rubber hose for the edging. ( Nothing wrong with those types, just my prefference.) So simple construction 2 ( 1-4" ) sheets of plywood cross grain glued-pressed together, coated, dishwasher hose affixed for edging ( SCA purposes ) stretched leather epoxied over hose edging( Trying to capture a Historical look) strips of leather to hide seams, 2-piece steel Rivets, Boss my buddy provided the steel plate & assisted me with forming. Typical plumbing hangers for re-enforcement . Arm straps harness grade. stretched canvas on the face, hand painted , waterproof sealed. The painted design influenced by the Saxon-viking culture colors corresponding of my SCA group. Stats: Size :28" round ( sized for single line-combat) Weight: 6lbs 1.2 oz Material: 2x 1-4" crossgrained pressed plywood Edging: Pressurized dishwasher hose epoxied & wrapped with 2 oz leather Boss: 14 gauge carbon steel 6"x6" x 1 1-2" deep bowl Hardware: 2 piece steel rivets, Harness grade adjustable arm straps foam arm padding covered in black suede Canvas face, hand painted Thanks for looking enjoy

wicked! looks very good- get a pic up of you in your full kit! Good on you finding time to make such great projects. You really could offset costs by selling some of your work

Thanks Chris, I'm pleased on the outcome, cost wise its fairly inexpensive, always have leather around etc, canvas laquer is cheap, more time spent on the labor of shaping the Boss lost track of how long it took to get just right LOL ! Looking forward to using it truth be told. I have thought about offering some designs, on projects, when i made my castlee & matching dagger scabbards etc, round same time Sarge started into works for the community. I work alot, and still toss the idea around, everything i just make for myself for now. I will get a pic up of the whole kit soon, i had a Higher end custom helm forged for me mixing 7th-8th c period Saxon culture theme with a modern upgrade for SCA , not your standard pot. or decorative ebay display helms its done after 1 month lead time , will be arriving next week to complete the look . I'll post when it arrives. with the pics i sent him & emails It came out FANTASTIC

cool. I love helmets- I have to check myself before I start a whole new collection addiction so I leave myself to pics for now... the work that goes into shaping and assembling makes them very interesting to me

If it helps, the shield in my avatar is the same diameter and I'm 6'2" 250 pounds. Though I'm crouched slightly in the photo. I'm a little disappointed in your choice of grip, but I'll assume you have your reasons for not using a center grip on your round viking shield. Actually, I imagine a center grip wouldn't be very helpful in SCA combat. I'm sure I'm grossly over simplifying it, but what I've seen of it always looked like slap fights with sticks. Lol.

Grossly oversimplified, yes. Center-grip shields are actually rather popular in the SCA. They require a more active fighting style and more arm endurance, though, than the typically strapped heater. Also have to learn proper technique to keep them from being tilted out of a protective position. So they will remain in the minority. Similar story with kite shields, though not quite as bad as they are still typically strapped.
Come out and join us sometime. You might be pleasantly surprised.

I was mostly just poking fun. I did archery with the SCA for a couple of years and got to see a little fighting at a couple of events. SCA Heavy combat never interested me much though. I'm of the mind that I'd rather use boffer weapons and wear period armor, than try and pretend to be a viking while wearing plate armor(even if it is plastic under a tunic).

There might be a certain draw to that. But no insurance company will cover you if you use anything harder than a foam boffer for it. That's the main reason behind our (and the European) armour requirements.

Sorry guys, been outta the loop for 2+ weeks, Flew back home to spend time with my Gram in her final days, as far as the shield construction method, was my personal choice to go with arm straps vs. center boss grip. although more manuvering - ability with a center grip, an old injury from the Army on my left hand & wrist prevents alot of agile movements & it strains -tires it out fast, so i went with arms straps to compensate, thats all. @ Anuan- I'll try to get a picture up when i get some time @ Taran- it was approved via my local Marshall The hose i used is still flexible, not rock solid if i made any mis-conceptions in my original post @ Tendrax yes you should come out & join us, its an expeirence thats for sure
