Gen 2 Excalibur Sword Question

Hi SBG,
I am new to the forums and sword collecting.
I have purchased my first functional sword just recently. When I got it the leather was all warped, (looks like it had water damage), it had rust spots on the blade, and the brass fittings were filthy. I used Mink oil on the scabbard and it loosened up the leather cuz it was all stiff and dried out. But to get the brass and the blade shiny like new I used Mother's metal polish because it says it's safe for all metals. The brass shined up to a mirror finish but the blade is going to need some more polishing before the rust, or whatever those dark spots are, will be completely gone.
I was wondering if anyone can tell me the best way to sharpen my sword? I haven't tried it before but I have sharpened knives with a sharpening stone and they came out more dull before I started. I also scratched them up real bad too. Is there a way I can sharpen my sword without damaging it?
I am trying to find out when mine was made. I have done extensive searching on finding information about it. I know the Gen 2 Excalibur had several runs and is now discontinued. I think they started making them in 2009. Any help would be appreciated, there just isn't much information about this anywhere.
It has the sword frog attached to the wood scabbard, with the brass cap on the end, and on the hilt says G2 on one side and ES040 on the other.
I've read that they also have the date on the hilt but mine doesn't. The pommel is also threaded and not peened.
I absolutely love cutting with this sword.
I appreciate any feedback.
Thanks,
William
