I am an Australian resident (New South Wales, specifically) curious about starting collecting swords and also using them, learning techniques and perhaps even becoming a re-enactor. I have no idea where to start, however. I'm mostly interested in western swords, and almost all the swords I'm after come from overseas. I've never been able to find definitive information on how to get swords into the country, what to expect from customs, and what licences or prerequisites I need to order in and own swords. I'm not interested in sharp swords for now, but I might look into it later. I also won't rule out a katana here and there. I've got a special deal set up with www.lancasters-armourie.co.uk/ and I really want to make sure I have everything right so I don't suddenly lose around 1000 AUD due to lack of information. Help! D:

And according to my latest search those in NSW are ok for the present. If you live in Victoria, Australia - too bad.
Don't forget that these laws will be coming to a State near you real soon.

Well I'd better do it quickly then.
Not only that, the custom sword I'm after will take about 12-14 weeks to complete - in hoping the laws don't change by then D:

There are no import controls on swords. The only state that cares about ownership is VIC, and they have exemptions that cover 98% of people anyway.
I do not see or have heard of any changes to this. If the cost is under $1000 you pay no tax or fees to bring it in. Over that and you are up for GST etc.
If you are after something sooner, I have a few swords with me in Canberra I could send a list to you if you PM me your email addy..
Cheers!

Change is coming, already in SA we have laws such as - "17—Undetectable knife A knife— (a) that is made wholly or partly of a material that prevents the knife from being detected (or being detected as a knife) by either a metal detector or by a method using X-rays; and (b) that is capable of causing serious injury or death." This as an example means every plastic letter-opener made by the average high school student in plastic class. 18 dagger means a sharp, pointed stabbing weapon, ordinarily capable of being concealed on the person and having— (a) a flat blade with cutting edges on both sides; or (b) a needle-like blade that has a round or elliptical cross section or that has three or more sides, but does not include a bayonet or a sword; 2—Bayonet A weapon designed or adapted to be used solely or predominantly as a bayonet. (blanket ban) more info is available here. www.sapolice.sa.gov.au/sapol/ser ... armour.jsp By utilizing wide ranging descriptions anything can and will be banned over time, bayonets are banned, why? most are single edged knives.
