I'm figuring on making a sheath for my new knife- either a back carry one with the grip at my shoulder (lift up to release knife), or at my hip (needs to be pretty low as the knife is 18" long). I have my own usual ideas but thought I would ask here for more ideas and suggestions-- maybe even a way to make one system that can convert... thoughts? If nothing else comes up I can easily make a low slung holster that ties to my leg and has a loop up to my belt- probably the most practical. On my back would be less practical but more "kewl" of course  . I guess for that I could rig up a 4 point leather belt wrap arounf my shoulders and waist. Ideas? thanks

small of the back is good. the curvature of your spine causes your shirt to hang loosely over the lower back, reducing the imprint on clothing, it's easily accessible, and only the most thorough pat down will find it, as most people don't check that area (not sure if this is a concern).

good suggestion for comfort for sure- would also not get in the way of my shoulderblades as I move my arms. I was thinking diagonal across the back but might have to change that up. Forr cc I think this knife would get spotted though as it's a big-un at 18.5" long

Something that big is definitely awkward to carry, wherever you put it, but depending in the shape, lower back is the best bet. Least obtrusive over a broader range if motion, in my experience, just don't fall onto your back.
I probably missed it, but what sort of knife is it?

it's this one: Bolo Brushknife ZS by our friend Fallen. It's a helluva knife and a great slicer and chopper. already kiiled some bottles and split some wood with it

Ah, yeah, that'd be either on my side, strapped low and tied to my leg or across the small of my back. It's almost too big to bother.

yeah, a back strap carry would be more for show than real use. I think I'll make two- each a dedicated carry type rather than one convertible. Just ordered a bunch of leather and snaps and such from Tandy. I had been waiting for leather coming from Dangerous Threads for the last two months but since nothing has shown I had my money refunded. Going to stick to Tandy from now on.

You could go with a upside down carry back sheath like in the Book of Elli. I known you are not worried about concealed carry, but wouldn't you like to pull out for under your jacket and say this is a knife.
As far as a hip carry you can go with a higher carry if the sheath is open in the front about half the way down. It's the way my kurki's are did with high carry sheaths.
Thanks for the praise, may the knife serve you well and never fail.

hmm, back carry to draw from under a coat- gotta find some examples of that now. How does the knife release- some kind of snap that separates from the force of drawing the knife?

Surely you've seen Crocodile Dundee, his sheath just uses a regular strap type release you can use your index finger to release. Just don't know about the suspense system used in either movie.

For something that big I like a hip carry the best, hung from belt at 9 o'clock, and I like having no tiedown so that the knife is still draw-able when seated. If you're thinking back carry, like for hiking or the Apocalypse, have you considered pairing this up with a MOLLE vest or backpack? Seems more secure than a separate back strap, and it wouldn't interfere with carrying other gear as well. You could pick up a cheap MOLLE vest pretty easily (Voodoo brand sells for around $30 online). And with leather purchasing, I've always found veg tanned leather on eBay for much less than I see at Tandy. Here's one vendor that I've purchased from, and am very happy with the service and quality: stores.ebay.com/1-Source-for-Lea ... 34.c0.m322

Nice work man, that's a tough lookin' rig. I like how you did the risers on the scabbard, I just did something similar on part of a 'tactical' scabbard for a shortsword.
I'll be interested to see how you wind up doing the back rig, the Book of Eli setup could be really cool (and pretty concealable).

when your knife gets that long you might need to switch to a left-side carry....
