Recently I saw this thread by Anders; the update was that he had acquired a French Mameluke sword. The website 'Universal Swords', another branch (presumably) of the quite active Chouhan family of Indian sword retailers, happened to have two rather interesting kilji for sale.
I've been interested for quite some time in finding a nice kilji blade for conversion into a Scottish 'turcael' basket-hilted saber.
So I decided to contact them regarding those...
The answer was quite prompt.
Friendly chap!
The pictures he provided were much larger than the ones on their website. Unfortunately they turned out to be quite blurry once zoomed in, so they weren't much help.
1.4 kg is, from a quick conversion on Google, 3.08647 lbs. This is hefty.
A quick comparison with pieces from Kult of Athena:
--Cold Steel Persian Shamshir: 1 lb 13 oz. This is very often called a 'light and fast' saber; I've only handled one, but I agree with the assessment.
--Windlass Persian Scimitar: same blade and form as the Cold Steel, with different fittings: 1 lb 2 oz. This can vary; I got one that was quite hefty, probably closer to 2 lbs.
--Damascus Steel Turkish Kilij: 2 lbs 1 oz.
Next question I ask will probably address the price. If it's on a par or more than the last one I posted from KoA, then it's not really worth it compared to that one when you include the shipping.
I may also inquire if they could do a mono-steel version, as I don't particularly need a pattern-welded blade, which his response of 'Damascus' indicates... the 'quality' response is obviously marketing, he's just doing his job there. It does look like it has a positive full tang, so that's a good thing!
If any of you would like to know more, I'd be happy to contact him with your questions... in the meantime, I'll keep this thread posted!
