...and when I sent a text to see where she'd been, she informed me she was at a gun course for women. I had no idea she was going to be attending a gun course. My mother's never been the type. She just informed me that she's even gone and won a gun, valued at $500. Here's the picture she sent me: Apparently it's this thing: www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/ ... 7751_image I'm impressed...and a little bit jealous.

Rifle through her purse. As long as there isn't a receipt in there for rope, a shovel and a bag of lime you're in the clear. You done anything to upset her lately?

 Got to look the gun over for myself just now. Good weight, bit small for me, but perfect for my mother. Couldn't have found a better gun for her, I think. The laser is nice, and the cylinder release is smooth...didn't get to try the trigger. Asked her when we're going shooting, haven't gotten an answer. Raffle tickets were $1 each, she and her fiance bought five each. She won this gun AND a 30-minute massage on two of her five.

Neat! I won a drawing some years ago and got a .22 caliber Walter SP22. I think it is ugly but after I got to fire it, I liked it.

It's a .38 Special +P, so I'd say pretty powerful. At least, strong enough to make a guy rethink the value of mom's belongings, I'd wager. Though it only holds five rounds in the cylinder... Oughta see if there are any speed loaders for it; I imagine so.

The laser looks a bit funny. It may have been damaged?

S&W makes a great gun. Do not let her get in to the habit of looking for the laser and lining up the laser with what she wants to shoot. Honestly, remove the batteries from the laser until she is well acquainted with the firearm - I have seen way to many novice shooters rely on the laser instead of the sights. The laser is only really good for when you are trying to take a shot and cant get a good look down your sights, they are not magical bullet hole placers.
Also, I am jealous

bbhuang: Not sure what you're looking at, the laser sight assembly is on the opposite side of the gun from the one pictured, and shouldn't even be visible...but I checked the gun over, myself, and it seemed free of any glaring flaws. Kent: Agreed, S&W's good stuff. Years back I got to try out my grandfather's .38 and it was great; haven't gotten to use this one, bit the build quality seems solid. I made a point to check the iron sights out, and if I get to go shooting with her I'll make sure the laser stays off for the first dozen or so rounds, then we'll get it sighted in...and turn it back off. Making me reconsider whether saving up to pay off credit cards should be redirected to a gun fund, instead...

Sorry, I was thinking of the cylinder release. It's right next to the laser activation button as I recall. Maybe it's just the angle. But it looked weird to me. My mom has one too but I haven't seen it in awhile.

I looked at the picture again, and while I'm not sure what it's supposed to look like, I think the photo is just an awkward angle. I haven't actually seen the gun since she got it, when we all passed it around; she was supposed to go shooting today and get familiarized since she's off her second job, but her fiance is under the weather so they're staying home. I can say that the cylinder release is awkward, for me. It's supposed to be ambidextrous, and i guess it is, but because it's ambidextrous it's just in a weird place. I'd prefer it to be right above my thumb, but I'm right handed, so that would put it on the left side of the gun, which would be awkward for a lefty, who would probably prefer theirs on the right. Center is a compromise, but I'd argue it a rather uncomfortable one... Still, mother seems content. I guess we can't argue with what she paid for it.
