From what I see it's a replica but I'm browsing with my mobile. And only looked at 2 pictures. But it looks like a $100 sword.

Shin gunto would never have had a scabbard like that; not regulation. It would also have been extremely rare for them to have engraving on the blade like that. Perhaps a presentation piece, but otherwise no. The tsuba (hand guard) is also completely wrong, the Japanese never used the double-headed Imperial Eagle motif. This is probably the best website out there for shin gunto reference... home.earthlink.net/~steinrl/military.htmFor the tsuba... www.stenger-scott.com/Export25.htmNote the layered structure; it was made with extra, often shaped, seppa (spacers or washers) as opposed to the one piece structure you see here on this reproduction. Hope that helps!

Looks like a deliberately aged knock off , If the owner knows what a Shin-Gunto is why is it so cheap? looks like the blade has a deliberate acid wash to highlight the folds, I would like to see a photo of the tang before writing it off entirely, so let's put it into the 95% fake with a 5% chance of being something else.

The "hada" is too loose , wide ... however you want to descibe it. It looks to me not just to be acid enhanced but the be created by acid.. ergo not a folded blade at all. It DEFINITELY is not hada of tamahagane which comes not just from folding but from the way the bloom is born of iron sand in the tatara. If the steel is not tamahagane . there would be no folds ... The koshirae is all wrong , the horimono is poorly done and out of place... the only thing is that the geometry is *slightly* better than many fakes... however there is no doubt at all in my mind that this sword is 100% fake. Here is a good page to view www.jssus.org/nkp/fake_japanese_swords.html
