Hello there. I am in the market for a good "Chinese" sword. I recently read the review of the Jin Shi's Han Dynasty Jian Sword. It is so different than the usual "Tai Chi" sword that I am very close to pulling the trigger and buying it. However, I recently saw a VERY similar sword on Kult of Athena's website. I noticed some differences but all in all it is almost identical. I know that Jin Shi's is has a hamon on both sides. I could not tell whether the "Han Dynasty" sword on Kult of Athena's website has one. The price difference is drasitc so I assume it isn't the same. Can some one please let me know for sure? Below are some pics of both This is the Jin Shi This one is from Kult of Athena

Hard to say if these are one and the same. They do look similar but I think we will more pics to say.
For your information, I believe these blades are replicas of war swords used in the Han dynasty period of China's history. In form and function, I think they had little in common with Tai Shi swords.

Jin Shi's is not the same as the Kult of Athena just the same style, which is why they look similar. Jin Shi has their blades custom made for them, they are not sold to any other vendor.
From what I have heard, the Jin Shi Han Jian is far superior to other Han Jian in the same price range.
Last I heard Jin Shi also had a limited stock of the new Han Jian in, and you would not have to wait for them to be made.
I would recommend Jin Shi over Kult of Athena, especially if you plan to do any cutting.

I *think* I contacted KoA about that exact same sword. I can't say for sure but I'm fairly certain it was the old Valiant Armoury Han Jian (pre-Sonny). That one's functionality was questionable, at best. KoA definitely doesn't carry Jin Shi as far as I know...

Compare closer looks K of A Jin Shi First thing, the handle wrap is completely different. Second, Jin Shi's is the classic 8 sided blade, which is traditional. While K of A's is a more modern style jian blade. Third, you can see K of A has a bunch of engraving on theirs. While Jin Shi only has the little bit, which I think is just the blade smith's name.

The statistcs of Two swords are different the jin shi is longer than KoA. Jin shi han jian has blade 39" and handle 10". The KoA has blade 22" and handle 7".

The Jin Shi will be the far superior blade. In quality and in historical accuracy. If it's not affordable, the Rodell Cutting Jian, CS Gim, CS Battle GIM, and most Sinoswords jian are quality pieces that can be had for $200 less. Not as good in quality, and most are not as good historically, but you'll get your money's worth. But if you can afford the Jin Shi, grab the Jin Shi. Unless you want custom work. Jin Shi does not seem to be doing that any more, alas.

Hi, just to clarify, I commissioned the Jin Shi sword shown in the photo. The engraving on the blade is my wife's name, not that of the blade smith

The price for the Han Jian that Jin Shi has in stock right now is $449.99. You could get a custom sword that could cost less or more depending on your specifications, but you would need to wait for it to be smithed in China, shipped to Canada for extra quality control, and then shipped to you.
