I'm guessing steel plate with leather arm straps. Interesting looking concept.

yes definatly interisting right. The shields are Messer dueling shields, haven't as of yet seen one in a meuseum but 3 sources have picts like this.
Steel plate, humm.... this presents a bit of a challange, I accept  . If I go with steel plate what gauge should I use 14?

Whats the source material?
If I where to make a functional version, steel over wood and rawhide, with a crease/bend down the center to stiffen it.

The picture is from a anonymous German Fechtbuch manuscript from the mid-1400s called Gladiatoria. The other Fechtbuchs are not named.

Good point, its a miniature shield so it will need some kind of lining inside to absorb the shock of impact.
Using 14 gauge steel (1.9mm) sounds about right.

I would expect some sort of lining as well, possibly wood with leather straps and steel riveted to the timber.

The over arm strap I would make leather, I would have one strap made from steel covered in wood and leather to be held in a closed fist. It needs to be firmly attached enough to get all of the punching power you possibly can without breaking or stressing the shield.

14Gg is going to be Very heavy and not neccessary if you layer it over wood. I wouldn't go any heavier than 16Gg and probably 18 or 20 over wood. Even if there's no wood, I think I still would keep it to 16Gg.

16Gg wouldn't be bad, or even wood with 16Gg. I just wonder how I should attach the wood and 16Gg, With rivits? If there is a better way please let me know

Today we have adhesives for such jobs, but in a period piece it would have been riveted around the edge.

Started draw up and lay out. Any ideas on what I should paint on it when it's construction is finnished. Going with wood with steel, linen cloth covering, leather covering, bolt and tack construction.
