Baltimore sword and knife Co.
This company refuses to answer my one simple question. 'What are your swords made of" I have witnessed many people asking that on there facebook. baltimore *IGNORES* them. I have sent them a few emails, The last email was asking me to stop asking them. I almost died in absolute shock. So i asked them on there facebook and comment deleted, asked again comment deleted. Then they blocked me.
My theory is that there weapons are made out of Stainless Steel. I mean, why else not tell us? I mean they sell 300$++ swords . . . Everyone wants to KNOW!!.
So i have come to this forum, the Palace of the "Sword God". To complain about baltimore sword and knife co.

It's not stainless man. I have spoken to Matt on numerous occasions and I know Sam so rest assured, their made out of carbon steel like everything else. I've also seen the inside of their shop and seen them forge and do stock removal so their making them in site. The $400+ range are rough finish pieces designed for stage fighting. When you start to see the swords in the $500+ range the finish get's considerably better. I don't do stage combat, but if I did I don't think I'd care too much about a fine finish as the sword is going to get banged up anyhow. Matt can also pattern weld and has done some nice pieces but the prices for pattern welded blades can get past $1000 pretty fast. I hope this helped.

BKS isn't stainless. They are a reputable and as honest a group of guys as you could want... They may dance rather oddly when polishing/sharpening (at least Matt does) but they make EXCELLENT stage fighting swords. In my opinion, they make the best for that. And their other offerings are fast improving,.

I can't comment about what their emails may have told you (or not told you), but I have experience buying from them and have always been happy. That said, it may be difficult for them to tell you what their swords are made from as they use a number of materials. Last I remember hearing from Matt they were mostly using 5160 for their stage combat stuff, but often use other high carbon steels for other pieces. I know my sharp sword from them is made from 4140, perhaps not the best steel for a sword but decent enough, and another I remember was forged from a railroad spike or some such, which may not be a particular modern alloy but was good for that particular sword.
As an aside, could you perhaps give us a link to where people are asking what material they use? I tried looking on facebook but was unable to turn anything up.
Hope that helps, Alan

I also know Matt and Kerry used chainsaw teeth to make damascus patterns, cable, they smelt their own wootz, and can work (I asked) meteoric iron... With this ability, why would they use stainless?

I have one of the swords they made for SBG and it is carbon steel. Not sure what type of carbon steel, but is a real sword.

Uh... no? Baltimore is kind of in Maryland? I know they moved their shop about a year or two ago, but I don't think they left the state.
Sam *might* be in WV, I don't know for sure.
Of course I could be wrong, anybody who knows better feel free to correct me.

I have handled over +35 BKS swords and fought with them in my high school group which does living history, definatly not stanless, I've cleaned my fair share of rust off those suckers. The reason they won't tell is the same as why most people never tell of how to do tricks, once every one else knows theres nothing special anymore. Think of it this way BKS is a movie star and you are a fan, why in the world would they give you their cell phone number and address.

They probably dont want to talk about it becaue the subject gets beat to death. Everyone wants some SUPERSTEEL that has mythical properties and dont know enough to realize that any medium to high carbon steel will suffice.
Concerning Carbon Steel, 54 Rockwell is 54 Rockwell, no matter what the parent alloy is.
Long and short, IT DOESN"T MATTER.
Is the difference between 9260, 5160, or 1060 really going to influence your decision to buy or not??

Baltimore is in Massachussetts, dangit. ...And that doesn't necessarily mean anything about where they are just because they call themselves that.

I was at their shop last week. It is in Marriottsville, Maryland. It has been in that location for several years. I have been there several times over the last four years.
They are certainly capable of making SS blades but I doubt they would be interested in obtaining the stock or retooling for any kind of SS production run. There is a lot of sheet metal laying around the shop in varying degrees of oxidation for their stock removal projects. They work with many different carbon steels from different sources. They also work with titanium, brass, etc. They can be rather adventurous so anything may be possible upon request.
They.......Matt and Kerry Stagmer......have always been up front and friendly with me. They have always answered my questions without reservation. We have in fact become friends and they have my respect. I met Sam face to face for the first time last week while he was working in the shop. He was also friendly and took the time to discuss current events in the blade industry with me and pulled me aside to show me some of the projects he was working on. Don't tell him I said so but he's a good guy........and talented.
So............as for BKS secrets..........not so much.......

Wrong Baltimore is in Ohio I suspect that BKS is using foldspace technology to operate forges in three states simultaneously. THAT is their real secret.

Chuck Norris must have accidentally leaned against it and it went sliding!

Baltimore is also in California (now called Knights Landing), Vermont, Michigan, Ontario, and Ireland; there was also a Baltimore in 19th century Indiana, so they're not only using foldspace to operate in 3 countries simultaneously, but also in the past and present.

That's Boston! The Ravens are from Massachussetts. Like Edgar Allen Poe. Okay. Not the guys I was thinking of. I am away from home and my stash of business cards and thought that was the name of the guys I was going to get a sharpening class from before real life got in the way. ...I give up. I'm not as good at that as you guys are. Screw you And the computers you posted on!

It's there choice to tell you or not. I find your post a bit weird, and don't get why you are so upset. They refused to anwser your question, they even asked you to stop asking. So i'm guessing you asked a lot of times. After they asked you to stop you asked again and again.
And then your ridiculous theory. "because they don't answer there blade must be stainless" i can't even explain to you how stupid that theory is.
Sure lots of people want to know, but it's there choice to tell. I'm guessing that if i wanted to buy a sword from them and asked the question they would answer me, but if they didn't it's my choice to buy from them or not.
