Custom Atrim Two Handed Leaf Sword :
Well iv got some time off after my Shoulder Operation ,so iv decided its time to catch up on some reviews iv been meaning to do for a while now . This will be No. 6 of 14 reviews to follow over the next month or so .
Introduction:
Last year Sonny at the Custom Sword Shop had a bunch of Atrim blades just waiting to be turned into swords , there were a couple that caught my eye and in the end I ended up taking 4 of them and had Sonny work his magic on them with full scabbard packages as well . The 4 blades were :
1) 1557
2) Type XVIII
3) Leaf Blade
4) Short Broadsword
A lot of work went into these by Sonny as they all received Custom Hilts ,the blades where all given an even satin polish and full scabbards with artwork were also added .
This will be review No 4 of the 4 Atrims done by Sonny at the CSS .
This was one sword that I really looked forward to receiving . The idea and how it was done was something both myself and Sonny chatted about via e mail in detail . The basic concept was a different version of a Glamdring ,so something similar but at the same time different . What it ended up as is something that far exceeded my expectations .
This review will not be a long one as iv yet to do any real meaningful cutting with this sword and ill update this review at a later stage .
Historical overview:
There is no historical background per say for this sword as it is a Functional Fantasy piece
Initial Impressions:
Over the last 15 months I have received 17 swords from Sonny ,from Atrims to Albions and the Valiant signature lines . All the swords were customized to various degrees , some had some minor tweaks with scabbards details ,others like the Albion and Atrims were complete re works and Custom pieces . This piece was a complete Custom built on an Atrim Leaf Blade . A lot of work went into this piece as it really was a complete make over from having the blade re worked with an even satin finish to a complete new hilt and scabbard . From all the swords I have received from Sonny this one and the Albion are my two favorites as the work done and how they turned out is really way better than I ever expected .
My initial impression when unboxing was “WOW” , the sword looked stunning with the fittings all made from scratch and the scabbard that complimented the sword perfectly . I took her out of the scabbard and the balance felt really good in hand ,Sonny had done an awesome job on this one .
Statistics:Overall length: 48 inches
Blade length: 36.5 inches
Grip length: 9 inches
Weight: 3.8lb
Blade Material: CNC Milled 5160 High
Components:
The Blade:
The Blade was finished to a nice satin finish and the edge touched up by Sonny . This blade still had the original blackened fuller which I did ask Sonny to remove ,unfortunately he didn’t do a complete even job on the fuller as there were still some very light traces of it ,saying this though personally I did not mind as it added some character to the piece . It was a very minor issue and something that I do not see as an issue at all .
As some will know , I have a love for my leaf blades and this one is no different . It was my first two handed Leaf Blade and I just love the shape of it .
The Handle:
Originally I was expecting a one piece tapered down grip section , but Sonny asked if he could try something different as he had an idea in mind for this one , I of course said go ahead . The end result is far better than just a one piece grip . He ended up splitting it with the top portion (near guard) being in a blue tooled leather ,then a metal spacer followed by a very well done blue wire wrap for the lower portion that tapers down to the pommel . Enough said though as the pic describe it way better :
The Fittings:
The fittings feature a nice upward curved guard with a different take on a fish tail like pommel .These were all made from scratch by Sonny with a nice even finish to them .
The Scabbard:
This I left entirely with Sonny , he did a great job with risers matching the blades fuller and a very nice Gondor Tree embossing towards the top . The Leather work is really good on this one with the Gondor Tree really popping out . My only wish is that the chape had been a little different on this one ,something maybe a little more elaborate . There is nothing wrong with the chape and it still looks good ,its just a personal opinion from myself .
Handling Characteristics:
She handles really well with the whole hilt set up adding a nice counter weight to the blade providing for a nicely balanced piece . The leaf Blade itself is wider than most 2 handed leafies Iv seen ,this just gives the sword that additional feeling of power when handling her .
Cutting:
Unfortunately I have not had nearly enough free time of late with a young family to do any meaningful cutting with her . I have put her through some single and double rolled mats ,both which she handled with ease and would like to try some more once my shoulder has healed up as I'm certain that she can handle more . From the little I have cut with her though she has handled herself very well and ill try updating this review later with a video and further observations once my shoulder has healed and I get a chance to do some cutting .
Conclusions:
A really nice Fantasy piece that not only looks very good but is fully functional . Sonny did a really good job here far exceeding my initial expectations .
Pros:
A really good looking package
Solid Atrim Leaf Blade which are difficult to come by these days
Great balance and weight for a large leaf sword
A unique Hilt set up
Cons:
These are very minor with the second one being more of a personal opinion than a con in the strictest sense :
The fuller was not as well finished (in terms of polish) as the rest of the blade was
The chape could have been a little more elaborate and tied in with the pommel better .
The Bottom Line:
This sword far exceeded my expectations and once again proved that Sonny is a great guy to work with and does some really great work within reasonable prices .
