First of all, I thank the administration for accepting me. I am from the Philippines, a college student and a katana enthusiast. I have been awed by the katana since I was a kid - a fire that I had to let die because it was something I deemed virtually beyond reach- however, upon being exposed to the internet and modern technology, I was reconnected with that fire. Now, I am setting my eyes on a japanese-style traditional weapons dealer here in the Philippines (and the only one here), and in some months time I will be able to share with you pictures of my katana (as I am still saving up).
What prompted me to join here, as many of you might wonder, is a question that I have had no luck in finding an answer to. I have searched different forums and I have never found a CLEAR-CUT answer. I even posted on yahoo!answers, and, it was there that someone told me to try my luck and register here.
So here's the question.
Which is better BETWEEN TWO DIFFERENTIALLY HARDENED KATANAs: A traditionally laminated one (say, Honsanmai lamination where hard=T10, medium=1060, soft=1045), or a high-carbon monosteel one (say, T10). PLEASE NOTE: both are differentially hardened (and unless for aesthetics, I think I know that folding is irrelevant).
PS: Dear sir's and madame's, I would really appreciate it if you help me out on this one. The katana I'm planning on will be based on my personal customization. I have read and read and read on different kinds of steels, downloaded documentaries on Samurai Swords, went through dozens of threads but I have never found a clear-cut answer to my question. :?
