Ok I admit , I tried to change something that wasn’t meant to be. I always wanted a polypropelene Han Jian waster . There are wooden sword maker who could make excellent looking wooden Han Jian waster, but I was not too keen to get them.
As I was adamant in getting the poly waster , I decided to convert Cold Steel polypropelene western style sword since their looks “somewhat’ resembled Han Jian looks. At first I decided to get Cold Steel Hand and half polypropelene waster , but due to its length , it is too costly to ship from CONUS to Southeast Asia. So I have to settle for Medieval sword version which has a shorter handle with round disc pommel.
Cold Steel Medieval training sword
Blade Length: 32 1/4"
Overall Length: 39 1/2"
Material: Polypropylene
Weight: 29.3 oz
Handle: 7 1/4" Long
I got the idea to lengthen the handle from the discussion on increasing the length of the Cold steel Hand & half waster at the Myarmory website

Rather than extending the length by adding a wooden spacer like the one done orginally for the Hand and a half, and to make the handle more like a Han Jian, I have to remove the disc shaped pommel altogether. Then I used Rawlings synthetic extended pommel which has a length of 13cm (5”) to which was connected with a threaded steel rod unto the handle base. The original length of the handle is 7 ¼” long , after the removal of the disc pommel, it was shortened to approx 5” and with the Rawlings extended pommel was attached , it had attained a length of about 10” (25cm).
Sorry I did not put any pictures how it was done , a colleague of mine helped attached the handle with the extended pommel , and by the time I remembered to take pictures, the whole process was already done. It was glued using a power glue usually for plastics material and then sealed with epoxy.
After that I used ordinary tennis grip band to cover the entire handle and to hide the ugly looking connected mid section. As for the sword guard, at first it was trimmed with beveled edge but after a while I though my sawing off the left and right wings altogether , will make the sword look more like those Han Jian sword guard.
Basically I was doing this modification for fun , I don’t have any background in CSA or WSA. I am sure there are readers out there who are more adept than me in doing modification such as this. Thanks for reading.
By the way, the I did not measure the POB of the waster before modification, but after the modification was done, the POB was about 7 ¼” from the sword guard. For a small built person like myself, this waster is pretty hefty to be used single handed, but with longer handle the sword handling is much better than before, it was after all a western style sword.
